Americans, what would you rather be called...

[personal profile] mekkio 2012-10-01 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, you know the wank drill of people whining and growling how wrong it is for Americans to call themselves "Americans" because, "There is South America and whole North America, therefore; people who live there can be called "Americans" too."

So, what do these people suggest Americans call themselves? "USAsians" or "USians."

Personally, I loathe this term. Not mention find it offensive that someone from another country can dictate what natives can call themselves. (Like telling a German, "I know you call yourself "Deutsch" but from now on, we say you should only use the term, "German. Thank you." But, this isn't about that.

I was thinking, rather than be called "USians/USAsians", I'd rather be called "Yankee." No one else on the planet uses that term. Yes, it can be seen as a slur but I'd prefer it than the other option. Thing is, I'm a Southerner and I still rather be called "Yankee."

If you didn't have the option of being called "American" any more, what would rather be called, "USian/USAsian" or "Yankee?"

If forced to skip on American, I think I'd quite like to be called Canadian.

Those both sound really silly - not to mention it's a little late in the game to change from "American."

I'd rather stick with Yankee. It has some negative connotations, but then again, so does American. At least it doesn't sound stupid. How would you say USian or USAsian? You-ess-ian? Us-ian? You-ess-Asian? Because that would just create confusion.

Now I'm imagining the next State of the Union address. "My fellow Yanks..."

Tbh, the first time I heard the term "Yankee" my first thought was 'But I'm not from New York.'

But I'd much rather be called that than "USian/USAsian." Partly because it looks like a misspelling of "Asian."

You could always be Statians or Stations. I don't think anyone would mind that one either.

I'd go with Yank or Yankee. Despite having been raised in the South, or, alternately, a state that couldn't make up its mind during the Civil War, and (a) sold to both sides (b) sent fighters to both sides.

If I didn't have the option of being called an American any more, I'd probably just ask my government to go to war on whatever asshole is telling me I can't call myself an American if I damn well please.

(both options are dumb)

You can't call all of Americans Yankees. There are a lot of cultural baggage with that term and a lot of people who would get pretty offended at being called a Yankee.

The choices you gave are kind of awful. I don't really have anything better though.

LOL I'm from South America and call Americans yankees all the time.

USians sounds awful xD

I think something like "US American" sounds good, and doesn't involve too much of a change that people would never adapt to.

I played a Korean game once and was constantly called a "Yankee" or "Yank". I think they meant it to be insulting, but I just lol'd.

The thing about people getting upset about using the term American...Canadians/Mexicans/South American people don't call themselves 'American' as far as I know. I don't see what the big deal is, other than anti-American wank.

I'm a Bostonian so I'd hate to be called a 'Yankee' ;p. I don't mind the term, I think it's catchy. I'd still rather consider myself an American, though.

Kind of related, but my dad is super anal retentive about the America thing. The whole, "IT'S NOT AMERICA! IT'S ONLY A part OF AMERICA!"

Except he also finds it very important not to conflate North, South, or Central America with each other, and feels personally affronted if you call him a North American despite Guatemala technically still being in that North bit. Fair enough I guess.

Really though, unless it's commonplace to call n/s/c. Americans as just Americans, I'm going to stick with calling United States' folk Americans.

eta: forgot to mention that I say Americans if I'm speaking in English. Like, if I'm talking to said dad, or any Spanish folk really, I say, "estadounidenses". Americano is okay afaik, and "latino american@" is also fair if you want to be specific.

I'd accept Yankee myself. It never rang as an insult, but I will be completely honest with you here: they'd have to pry "Americans" from my cold dead hands and cut out my tongue before I'd stop using it.

No choice needed. We'll just metaphorically arm-wrestle the rest of the Americas for the title and call it a day.

I'd rather be USAian before Yankee because, where I live it isn't 'can be a slur' - it *is* a slur. And, thank you very much, but I'd rather not have someone insult me when they're just trying to place my nationality.

You would not refer to people from the Republic of Turkey as "Republicans." You would not refer to people from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as "United Kingdomites." How does it make sense to refer to people from the United States of America as anything but "Americans?"

Canadian here, and I don't give a shit. I'm technically an "American" in the moronically pedantic sense as well, but if I want to be included, I'll specify "North American". If I'm talking about someone from South/Central America, I'll call them "South/Central American". If I'm talking about the whole mega-continent, I'll say "The Americas".

Therefore, "American" means "someone/thing of the United States of America" to me and there's zero confusion about it whatsoever.

TO those who insist this is "wrong", because wah wah wah waaaah ablooobloobloo: this whole argument is one of the stupidest fucking things I've ever heard and I say that as a technical ~~~American~~~ (of the Americas) myself. "USian" is the second stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard. Words in a living language are defined by how they're used. I don't give two shits what you call it in Spanish. I'm speaking motherfucking English motherfucker.

I just say North American or "from the US/United States." USians sounds stupid. How would you even pronounce that? "Ooo-zhuns"? "You-shuns"?

Yankee is kinda funny to me b/c I'm from the south and that's what we used to call notherners when I was younger. Though I don't here it much nowadays, or at least not being used sincerely. Idk, about the slur part.

Re: Americans, what would you rather be called...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't understand why people think "Usian" is any better then "American" in terms of not letting people from the United States of America take over a term for themselves, United States is still a pretty general term and that's like telling other people they can no longer name their country the "united states of..." anything. Other countries with United States in their name have existed (and isn't there still one country in Africa with the name?)

Yankee won't work either because Southerners view that as a word you'd only use for those from the North.

I'll stick with American, it's not perfect but neither is the name of this country.

I like being called American because it's what I grew up with. It's what I know. It's easily identifiable.

I would absolutely hate being called a Yank or Yankee. I have never had that term thrown at me in anything but a mean spirited way.

If for some reason I "couldn't be called American anymore", which is ridiculous, I would like to be called "Usan". That would be pronounced "ooo-sans". Sans having the pronunciation of sands but without the 'd' sound. But that will never happen. So... *shrugs*
