On the other hand, a Finnish friend told me they call us (all of us, not just New Yorkers) "jenkki" already anyway, so... idk.
USian/USAian just sounds ridiculous.

"A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court" is probably the most famous example, and then there's the Yankee Candle Company based in Massachusetts. I'm not sure how the team adopted the name, but I'm assuming it's because of the widespread application of the term by the British to all colonists during the Revolutionary War.
Ironically it was once a slur used *by* the New York colonists to diss their neighbors in Connecticut.

I don't know anything about baseball or any team's history though, so I really couldn't say for the team. It probably is why New Yorkers think it refers only to them these days though.
