I agree. The reviews this year were really hit-or-miss, and then came all the crossover reviews with other people on the site I had zero interest in. I think he was smart to end the NC when he did, imho.

Some of the crossovers were really good though. Discovered a few new producers. I'm sad NC will never review Rock 'N Rule now with DH.

Discovered a few new producers.

Which was kind of the point of him doing so many recently; he knew he was going to call it quits, and wanted to help out his fellow producers before he went.

The ones with Hagan and Todd were especially awesome, imo.

I wish I was interested more in the stuff Hagan reviews. Heavy Metal is one of my fav reviews outside Temple of Doom from the cross-overs.

I feel the same way about Oancitizen, the "Brows Held High" guy. I've seen and enjoyed a few of his reviews, but for the most part, I just can't get into art films. I will say: His review of Haxan is AMAZING.
[the link goes to his review, btw]

Also, I like both Cinema Snob and Phelous, but there's some films they review are a little too... extreme for me (same with Hagan, really). No way am I watching a video review of Cannibal Holocaust or The Human Centipede... [shudder]

Eh, I didn't like 'Heavy Metal' because I'm not a fan of Hagan. Which is disappointing, because I loved the movie and wanted to see the NC review it... just not with her (or anyone else for that matter).

I'll agree that the crossovers were a good way to introduce other reviewers, but they didn't really strike any chords with me. If they did for others, well, more power to 'em!

At least I still have Linkara to watch once in a while, heh.

I personally also liked the way he ended it, as well.

Eh, I think he should have dropped back from weekly to update a while ago. I'd rather have him monthly then not have any NC at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-03 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Me, too. He just posted one of the NC DVD's bonus review and you can see while watching it that he used to be so much more invested in it.

It really is time to move on.

Yeah, I agree. I think it was good that he retired the character when he did, because we still got some good stuff in the last year (and I'm glad he got all the crossovers out of the way, too). Any longer and interest in the character would've declined anyway.

Here's hoping his new stuff is just as entertaining!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-03 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I get the feeling the Nostalgia Critic will be his Frankenstein, in a way. What drew me to the site was watching nostalgic things I loved get ripped on. I was never really a fan of the movies, especially the last one which seemed really lackluster to me aside from the effects. I could barely sit through that godawful Ed impression JO did (How Linkara found that to be amazing I have no idea)

I hope whatever he does goes well for him, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-03 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there's still Nostalgia Chick (although some of her stuff really isn't all that nostalgic anymore, but I suppose "nostalgic" is also relative), and Bad Movie Beatdown, which I think covers some older movies. I mean, yeah, nostalgic things getting made fun of drew me in as well, but there's a lot of communities on LJ and websites that cover nostalgia anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-03 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I really can't stand the NChick as a person. I stopped caring about her videos when she made a sweeping statement about a show being a flat example of the "Smurfette Principal". The show in question wasn't, and the female was a lot more complex a character. It's sad she dismissed it so casually...I honestly do not believe she watched that show much at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think the risk of criticizing things is that you really have to know what you're talking about, and if she really didn't in this case, then yeah, that's fail on her part. Mostly I just got sick of her besties having cameos - it was funny the first few times, then it got a little annoying.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What show was this?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-03 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed 100%.

I agree. Meanwhile I think Lindsay has just been getting better since Dark Nella.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's about when she really hit her stride, figured out her style, and solidified her character. She wasn't bad before, but now she knows what she's doing.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm only somewhat sad to see him hang up the tie. His newer stuff was better than his older stuff (As watching the old DVD exclusives makes a little painfully clear) and I'd have liked to see him hit a few more things from my childhood, but I also hate seeing people keep things going on past the point that they can care about them anymore.

We still have some classic greats like Linkara, and some new guys who do excellent stuff like CR. (And some new guys who are obviously still learning and are kind of grating, cough ERod cough)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Hell, I stopped watching his reviews months ago just because they got so tired. It was smart of him to end it, and it was a good way to go. He seems like a pretty smart, talented guy so I'm looking forward to the new stuff he's making, though.

Well, this is what I get for not paying attention. @_@

He knew it, and I'm glad. I still love the Nostalgia Critic, but he didn't seem like he was having fun anymore. It seems rare when a creator noticing they're running out of steam and it's time to try something new, and I'm glad he's taking that leap. This is why I don't mind the Foamy reboot, or any reboot, really.
kathkin: (Default)

[personal profile] kathkin 2012-10-04 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh I don't think anyone's all that upset about him stopping - people have been commenting on his lack of steam for a while now and his reasoning was perfectly understandable. Only thing I'm bothered about is the lack of a proper warning rather than endless hint-dropping. :(

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that was kind of an obvious fact; Sad Panda was even pointing this out in his videos.
