Exhaustion 2012

[personal profile] dethtoll 2012-10-03 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Who's watching the debate tonight?

I've got a stack of late-90s JLA and Batman comics to read instead. It's not like I haven't made my pick already anyway. I'll wait for the Stewart/O'Reilly debate on Saturday.

OH! It's on Saturday? Awesome, that's the debate I really want to watch.

I might watch the presidential debate...dunno. I'm more interested in the third party candidates this year so I'm not as invested in it, plus I've been putting off work all day that I should probably do rather than watch the debate. But I sort of feel like I should watch it, too...hmm.

Not me. At this point I'd be willing to give the Joker a shot over Romney. That's only a little hyperbolic.

At least the Joker doesn't have the baggage of Bane Capital!

I am going to watch in between the SPN commercials. I, honestly, don't know which viewing is going to be scarier or campier.

I'm going to be watching with my Democrat friends on Twitter, making snide remarks and laughing when Romney goofs.

Then I'm going to watch Supernatural.

Not bothering. Gonna sleep instead, much better use of my time.

Serious question: do people actually watch debates with a mind to deciding who to vote for? As in, they haven't figured it out already?

That's pretty much the point of them, yes.

Sure, if I'm undecided. I find it helpful to see if the candidates can think on their toes a little and how good their public speaking skills actually are.

I am, but I'm gonna be writing porn (or attempting to) the whole time.

Watching it now.

Obama is kind of getting his ass kicked. Shit.

How so? I think he's doing well.

Yeah. Obama isn't calling Romney out for any of his bullshit. He's looking down instead of looking foward, he's slouched. What is he doing....

Idk if you've been following all the pre-debate talk but the campaign said a few days ago that his plan was just to talk directly to the American people as if Romney wasn't there, and the pundits have been saying that all he really needs to do is stay cool and not snap at Romney. I guess time will tell, I could be totally wrong, but I think he's got this.

Re: Exhaustion 2012

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
From what I'm hearing people do think Romney won. He was on the attack he was assertive, Obama was passive and didn't rebuff him. I'm so damned depressed :/ I really did not think Romney was going to win the debate, but he did.

[personal profile] caecilia 2012-10-04 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what it seems like they're saying :\ I was actually listening more than watching, from the other room, but my mom had her own running commentary on how Romney was making himself look terrible (I guess I shouldn't take her word for things.) And it was definitely the best speaking I've heard Romney do BUT...I really don't think it's gonna help him that much. He contradicted himself and didn't really explain how his plans are gonna work. Maybe he technically won this but I also don't think there was a BIG TURNABOUT MOMENT where he made Obama lose all credibility...also, the rehearsed zingers were obvious.

Romney had Rob Portman, who is an excellent debate coach. He's been rehearsing for quite some time now.

He still has a lot of bad blood to get over -- partly because he keeps opening his stupid mouth outside of controlled conditions like the debate.

First debate usually always goes to the challenger. Romney's going to be hung out to dry soon enough. More interesting is going to be the VP debate.

Pretty much, yeah. That's why I'm not too bummed out about this.

i'm with you. i thought romney definitely won in presentation. obama was obviously improvising it on the go with all of his pauses/um's/restatements whereas romney had a much smoother flow. but romney also evaded a lot of questions & seemed to rely a lot on pretty buzzwords and a couple of times i just gave up trying to understand his stance/logic. like the moment when he berated obama for planning to cut medicare? last time i looked the gop platform was based on a smaller federal government? & if romney's supposed cuts are going through, he'll probably have to take a sizeable chunk out of medicare too? and his insistence on no government revenue + tax cuts to lower the deficit--wow way to put all of your eggs in the private sector basket...which fucked us over 4 years ago.

mostly i'm looking forward to romney getting his ass handed to him in the foreign policy debate. :D

Yeah and I mean, everyone kept saying "Oh, we're gonna have to see the REAL Romney tonight!" and he...didn't say anything different, even if he was well-rehearsed. IMO the only real Romney is the one in that leaked tape.

Re: Exhaustion 2012

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
sure, what Romney said was nonsense, but it sounded good and was said with confidence and verve. ergo, Romney won the debate and in the minds of the American voter is the better candidate. America loves a smooth talker.

Just like Obama in the last election.

Man, I don't know why y'all seem loyal to individual parties. As far as I can tell from here, you've got two bad choices and a sown-up system. If it were me, I'd give this election up as a lost cause and concentrate on improving things for next time: so everyone this time should vote third party, well aware that no single third party will get enough votes to win, which will skew the percentages and make it clear that there's a huge body of the electorate motivated enough to vote, but so disgusted with choices and shenanigens presented to them that they won't vote for either party currently.

Then the big party that doesn't pay attention to this group will clearly miss all those votes next time, so both parties will have a very strong incentive to shift tactics.

Think long term.

Re: Exhaustion 2012

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-10-04 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's what I'm doing. Both of these choices suck. Third party, all the way. I don't care if my vote "doesn't matter", at least I'll be making an actual statement with my vote instead of throwing it away on a candidate I don't actually want to be president.

Oh, I'm voting third party.

I just dislike Romney a lot more than I dislike Obama. (and I think the picture I outlined is a pretty accurate picture of what happened tbh, with maybe a little more bitterness and cynicism than is justified)
