As someone so late to the party it'd all be over if it weren't for the lock-in that started down the road after everything else was boarded up, I watched my first episode of any Trek about 5 weeks ago. I don't remember what happened, other than that Picard sparkled grumpily, and I fell desperately in love with an android and his cat.

Since then I have devoured every episdoe of TNG, tried TOS and fell asleep (literally, though to be fair I was tired before I started), tried VOY and got annoyed, and tried DS9 and got disappointed, but resolved to come back to a different episode, perhaps after Worf joins.

Then I read this secret. OP, you very nearly broke my heart. RN I am so enthralled by the TNG gang that the thought of them not existing, even though it doesn't actually remove them from my reality was horrid. THEN I read the comments. Never before has fandom secrets filled me with such relief.

I have still blacklisted the new film though. $-)

Eh, I'd say watch the new film. There's no reason not to. And it gets the characters pretty well, even if the whole look of the film is off. Not as bad as I was expecting it to be.

There's just not really any reason to boycott the film - it's not doing harm to anyone or anything by existing. And it's a moderately enjoyable film, as long as you're somewhat able to divorce your expectations for it from the fact that's Star Trek.

(Also, you need to watch the best Star Trek TNG movie: Insurrection w/ commentary from Marina Sirtis and Jonathan Frakes. AMAZING)

Yeah I probably will, eventually. I think that my real knee jerk was also down to the fact that only RL friend who has watched any Trek hates the new movie, as I discoverd when discussing this secret with her.

I've just ordered the box set of Next Gen movies. I cannot wait. In fact, even though I've seen so many spoilers for Generations that I decided it couldn't make it any worse if I watched the Sci Fi Debris review of it, I STILL cannot wait to see it. I love the early days of fandom excitement, even the less good bits seem fun :-)

Oh and thanks for the commentary tip, I will definitely do that. I may not have bothered otherwise, I have a tendency not to listen to commentaries from actors whose characters I don't like much. Separation, I do not understand it.

Give the new movie a try. I worship TNG above all else, by FAR, and I felt born-again in my rapturous enjoyment of the new movie. It's like Ultimate Star Trek, if you keep up with Marvel comics terminology. Take it all with a grain of salt and it's immensely enjoyable.

Watching it, I felt ~Star Trek feelings~ I had last felt in... 1996?... with All Good Things. Take that as you will.

Plus the happenings of the main plot, and the Nimoy Spock that we see, is a direct follow-up to Unification.

And Geordi built one of the ships in the movie.

It's basically a TNG movie and the only good one, now that I think of it.

"It's basically a TNG movie and the only good one, now that I think of it."

I already said this above, but seriously: Insurrection with Sirtis & Frakes Commentary. It's amazing. Check it out.

I actually don't mind Insurrection, and it, along with Generations, is the only TNG movie where the characters are actually recognizable from the show (unlike the absolute abomination that was First Contact -- come at me). But the spirit, the optimism, the "Star Trekky" atmosphere and sense of adventure essentially ended with the TNG series finale, for me. It was all pale imitations and diminishing returns after that.

I never really felt it again until the new movie. But that's just me, I suppose.

I definitely get where you're coming from (seriously, screw First Contact). I don't mind Insurrection much - really, I started liking all of the movies a lot more once I started thinking of them as TNG Cast Reunion Camp. Just an opportunity for the actors to screw around. They're not terribly good, though. Generations is kind of... it's annoying because it's such a profoundly missed opportunity.

I liked DS9 although it doesn't have the same spirit as TNG. Nothing does. Nothing can, really. The nu-trek doesn't for me. But we'll always have TNG.

But we'll always have TNG.

Ain't that the truth. Five seasons of television and sci-fi perfection.

(we'll uh... hiccup over the first two seasons...)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with 5 seasons. But I'd say it's 3, 4, 5, 6, one half of season 2 (seriously, Measure Of A Man is an inner-tier Hall of Fame TNG episode, and there's a lot of decent moments through the rest of the season) and one half of 7 (had its moments, but notably worse than 3-5).

God, season 1 TNG was so bad.

You're not lying. But the collar-less uniforms give me an automatic uncomfortable tic because of season 1, so I tend to wince my way through any episode with them.

I'm glad that even though season 7 started getting uneven and undeniably declining in quality, the show never really jumped the shark. They saved that shit for the movies :[

And Geordi built one of the ships in the movie.

Well that's me sold.

As I said above, I will probably get around to watching it eventually. RN I'm waiting on the delivery of my NG movies *excited*.

*Tootles off to check which one "Unification" is.* Oh, THAT one. Oh that could be interesting.

Thanks :-)

The ship Geordi built is the Jellyfish, the ship Ambassador Spock travels in, just so you know for the future. :)

I will be sure to fangirl in an appropriate manner when the time comes :-)
