I resent it because Vulcan got destroyed so easily. It's like someone writing a WWII novel and deciding to do away with America, yet the Allies still win. WTF????

Consistency, where art thou?

Doesn't the 2009 Trek take place in an alternate universe (that's where the other Spock comes from, after all)? And if so, doesn't that mean all that stuff still happened?

I thought it was simply an alternate universe, not the erasure of everything altogether.

I mean, heck, if it erased everything, then why are we getting a Doctor Who/The Next Generation comic crossover?

Expect it doesn't. They made sure to say it was a alternative timeline just so people like you wouldn't freak out about Next Gen and such being gone. And even if it WAS you'd still get novels from the shows coming out. So it's not like it would even be gone gone.

Um, no, it's an alternate timeline.

Seriously, you're a Star Trek fan and you can't wrap your mind around alternate universes? TOS, TNG, DS9, and Voyager are still there. In another universe. They can still make shows and movies in that universe. Mind you, they probably won't, but they could.

You think it'll be that bad that everything is just completely erased? I was thinking about the reboot the other day and one of my thoughts was "they're totally going to attempt a TNG AU set of films some day" maybe...

I don't know how I'd feel about that tbh. Because some things will be very different.

This. Every time I think about the retcon I get sad. Especially Next Gen, which holds the softest spot in my Trek heart.

plus i loathed the new movie

Hmmm. I never cared much for TOS. TNG was my first intro (dude, I'm just turning 30, so y'know, age 'n stuff). Thought DS9 was boring until I got older (out of my teens) and totally adored VGR (Janeway was my favorite even if the writers sucked half the time. That's why fanfic exists). By the end of VGR I was convinced the writers were full of themselves (oh wait, they were) and therefore, I found the new reboot very satisfying in a "Giving Berman the finger" kind of way (and I liked it on it's own merit too).

I'm excited for the next one :D

Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Wow, how are we still getting secrets from people who didn't get the string theory shit?

Even still, you could just disregard it. I don't consider Enterprise canon even when I find it enjoyable.

...How do you watch Star Trek and not understand such a basic sci-fi concept as alternate universes? Seriously?

I'm assigning you reading. (It's okay, you already said you like Voyager.) Go read the Voyager novel 'Echoes' and figure it out. Bonus reading includes the Enterprise 'Daedalus' duology.

I like the later shows best too (TNG, especially, is my perfect TV show), but it is an alternate universe. While there are plenty of things I hated about it, it doesn't do jack squat to any of the characters I care about because it isn't them, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
As someone so late to the party it'd all be over if it weren't for the lock-in that started down the road after everything else was boarded up, I watched my first episode of any Trek about 5 weeks ago. I don't remember what happened, other than that Picard sparkled grumpily, and I fell desperately in love with an android and his cat.

Since then I have devoured every episdoe of TNG, tried TOS and fell asleep (literally, though to be fair I was tired before I started), tried VOY and got annoyed, and tried DS9 and got disappointed, but resolved to come back to a different episode, perhaps after Worf joins.

Then I read this secret. OP, you very nearly broke my heart. RN I am so enthralled by the TNG gang that the thought of them not existing, even though it doesn't actually remove them from my reality was horrid. THEN I read the comments. Never before has fandom secrets filled me with such relief.

I have still blacklisted the new film though. $-)

No, they're still there. You are probably right in thinking the other series are cut out of the Star Trek movie market, but that's not because of the 2009 movie destroying the timeline (which it didn't.) It's because TOS is by far the easiest series to adapt to mainstream audiences, because it was fun and cheese and hand-waving more than sci-fi. The end.

I'd say "wait another 40 years and there'll be a re-reboot" -- but it'll probably be a couple of decades sooner than that.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't replace the original timeline, it's an AU. And the original timeline has five separate series, ten movies (I think), a shit-ton of merchandise, conventions, more novels than any one person could keep track of, more characters than any other 'verse ever...it's a monster. I don't like that Vulcan was destroyed but I like the reboot for the new possibilities of how things might have went if....

It's like a 5 Things That Didn't Happen meme.

Or at least it is for me.

But everything that happened still happened in the original timeline, and IS still happening in various comics and novels and other things. That's why they call it the "prime" universe. Nothing got retconned.

The new movie is the one that's the random parallel universe, a mere offshoot. Hence the brilliance of what a Star-Trek-based "reboot" can do.

And nowadays, more fanstuff is being created for the primeverse series anyway. That's sure to change when the sequel is released, but a few years later it'll go right back. And if the idea of a totally separate random alternate universe proceeding independently of the prime one gets your goat, I suggest you talk to Worf about it, tbh.
