"The 20 movie retconned it all away"
"The 24th century is gone."
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Ohmygosh. Ohmygosh. Ohmygosh. I have not laughed that hard in a long time. Thank you OP.

In a practical, meta sense, they did get rid of it. I don't think OP was going for that but that's how I thin of it.

I mean, I understand why they did the reboot from a writing perspective. It makes sense. They wanted a new world to build in really, not one bogged down by every episode of every series. I get that.
I also wish they could spend equal time in both realities. Because both have so much to offer in their own ways. So yes, it's sad they're going to be focusing on one for a while over the other but that doesn't mean the less focused on one is gone forever, never existed, was retconned, or will never be visited ever again.
So while I understand what you're saying and I sympathize I think what you're saying is completely different from what OP is saying. So while I will commiserate with you I will laugh at the OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-03 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)It won't ever be visited again. It still exists, in a notional sense, and obviously the things that have already been made will always be there, but for all intents and purposes, the story of the 24th century Star Trek universe is over.

But for the sake of argument, you know all the actors are too old to really reprise their roles, right?
They could maybe do something in the far future with a new cast. It probably won't happen right now but you don't know what they'll do down the line.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-03 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)And comics and novels... I've read way too many terrible, terrible, absurd, off-character Trek novels and comics to give credence to the notion that they're canonical or should be taken seriously (even though they've improved a huge amount from the bad old days of the 90s). To count them as a real, meaningful continuation of the stories of the series. They're a poor substitute, even if they're entertaining in their own way.

You can't say for sure it will never happen because you're not a time traveler or clairvoyant.
Personally, I would love to see a crossover of the two realities.

That would be amazing beyond belief.

Yeeesssss, like, one plot line could be the realities have started merging, trying to fix themselves, but that's causing disaster and people/things/planets from each reality popping into each other. Then both teams have to join up to stop it. BEST EVER.
Edit: Just a thought. What if Old Vulcan showed up in no-longer-existing New Vulcan's orbit? People would shit their pants. (Of course the heroes would have to fix that but it would be pretty cool.)

I was just thinking, what if Nu!Uhura showed up in OS!Spock's bed?? His eyebrow would go so far up his forehead, it would kiss the back of his neck. :)
And still he'd say
"Fascinating."

The movies with those old (literally) casts of DS9, Voyager (shudder), Enterprise (double shudder), etc, were never going to happen anyway. Whereas expanded media, such as novels and comics, CAN still happen and ARE still happening with them.
So literally nothing of value was lost.

1: Canon is bullshit.
2: See rule #1.
3: If billions of people can have a sacred text with multiple creation and nativity stories, which in turn, have been adapted in dozens of variations by hundreds of authors, dramatists, and composers, fandom can consider Trek by Roddenbery, Nemoy, Berman, Frakes, and Abrams to be distinct bodies of work, worthy of being loved independently on their own merits.

Looool, it's sad that this is true. People ignore stuff all the time from canon because it either conflicts with itself, is extremely problematic by today's standards, or is just stupid.
As for the rest, yeah. I agree.
no subject
Although I'll always be here for the skants. Bless Roddenberry for those.
Need to make an appearance in the ST sequel, IMO
