Well, it was the June Rebellion. There's very good reason to think that it wouldn't have gone down in history at all had Hugo not included in the book. The freaking catalyst is a man dying of cholera because that was totally the government's fault and not the atrocious hygiene of the time.

People weren't rioting just because Lamarque had kicked it, though. In the unstable climate of a plague-ridden and starving city, the left decided to turn the funeral into a very explicit political demonstration (largely in response to pro-government pageantry of a certain govt minister's funeral just a few weeks earlier).
