"Shall we fight for the right to a night at the opera now?"

See, I've always loved how fucking pathetic these revolutionaries were. In the musical at least they have no real support, they get mowed down and they ultimately accomplish nothing. So if they keep it honest to the original I will lol if anyone compares them to modern movements. If they "beef up" the ABC crowd to reflect more favorably on modern movements I will be pissed.

Well, it was the June Rebellion. There's very good reason to think that it wouldn't have gone down in history at all had Hugo not included in the book. The freaking catalyst is a man dying of cholera because that was totally the government's fault and not the atrocious hygiene of the time.

People weren't rioting just because Lamarque had kicked it, though. In the unstable climate of a plague-ridden and starving city, the left decided to turn the funeral into a very explicit political demonstration (largely in response to pro-government pageantry of a certain govt minister's funeral just a few weeks earlier).

To be fair, the musical does a really crap job of translating the political group that Hugo describes. That "opera" line is particularly wtf. The revolutionaries of 1832 had just carried out a successful-ish revolt two years earlier and could reasonably expect another insurrection to attract popular support.
