Re: On swearing in front of children
(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)Swearing around children can be emotionally abusive, just like getting angry and shouty around them (even if not at them) can be emotionally abusive. Children find aggression much more frightening than many people seem to think, and swearing is generally aggressive. The point of swearing is that you use taboo words to express intense emotion, and in turn (provided you keep the words fairly taboo) indicate your extreme emotion and also relieves anger and pain. Only works if you hardly ever do it.
"Fuck you" is an extremely aggressive phrase, and is likely to upset children quite a lot, even if not directed at them. It can indeed be abusive, and I think you generally intend it to abuse, yes?
