He annoys me because of his writing, not his relationship. Seriously, he should have stuck American Gods back in the drawer until he had an actual story to go with his awesome concept.

The American Gods that I read had a story. Sorry that it happened not to grab you personally.

The American Gods I read had dozens of stories.

or at least until the name "Low Key Lyesmith" stopped seeming like a good idea.

I really thought "Low Key Lyesmith" was a clever bit of misdirection and he was going to turn out to be some random dude, but no. I guess that's a clever twist, a character turning out to be exactly what he seemed to be.

hahahaha you mean "so stupid it's brilliant"? Because I don't think that's what he was going for...

BACK THE FUCK UP

I KNOW THAT IS NOT MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE BOOK YOU ARE TALKING SHIT ABOUT. PREPARE FOR A BITCH FIGHT OF EPIC PROPORTIONS!

Just kidding! I mean, it is my favorite book, but you are allowed to not like it. Although I will say that was a bit harsh. Just because you didn't like the story (because it did have one, speaking objectively) doesn't make it a bad book or him a bad writer.

I didn't say BAD BOOK or BAD WRITER!!!!!!!!!!

"Annoying" is probably one of the most subjective words around, and one person's annoying can be another's most precious ever.

Honestly, I feel like Gaiman has written some great short stories, but his novels are often underdeveloped when it comes to the main characters and plots. He creates interesting worlds, but there's a little too much wandering and too little doing for me.

See, that's why I love his books. The wandering is the best part! (When asked about my favorite genres, it's always like "Road Trip Movies" and the like, so I guess that makes sense.)

Also, the way I read it, saying a book has no plot is pretty much the same as calling it a bad book, since a plot is basically the whole point of a book.

The story isn't about an epic battle, it's about one individual's personal journey.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Haha! So very true. I sort of enjoyed it but holy shit, is it very overrated for what it is.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
It would not have annoyed me with its plotlessness if the blurb hadn't promised me epic battle between the gods and war for the world. It's okay to not have a plot, some of my favourite books have not much of a plot (The Little Prince and Kino's Travels come to mind), but don't promise me a fucking epic battle and fail to deliver it.

I love this book to pieces, but it really could have used another round of editing or something. Maybe someone could have told him that he was trying too hard with Sam, or that the Master Plan could have use a little more foreshadowing or explaining or fleshing out or something, or that the characters from the mini stories were really awesome and maybe we wanted to hear from them again and have them play into the plot in some fashion, or maybe that it would have worked better as a collection of connected short stories, or SOMETHING.
Yeah, another year might have made it a total masterpiece.
