That scene is so rape it makes rape look like a wannabe of this. Do I ever understand why the OP used it.

I must have missed the part where Stane shoved his dick into Tony in this scene, thereby making it rape.

Oh wait.

Please stop trivializing real sexual trauma by saying that it pales in comparison to taking out a guy's pacemaker. This was probably traumatizing to Tony, yeah, and life-threatening at that, but attempted murder does not carry the same weight or history as sexual assault.

You're right. Ripping out a vital implant from someone's body, while horrifying, isn't rape.

However, I do understand what other-anon meant. Scenes where characters are drugged/powerless in movies or shows while someone is tampering with their body remind me of my own experiences way more than actual rape scenes, and they're much more common.

Not the OP, by the way.

Very seconded.

And btw, to the anon who was the impetus for the comment I'm replying to -

It might come as a shock to you that people have different triggers based on their experiences. To insist - as your comment seems to me to imply - that "it's only rape if there is penile penetration" is ... well, it's incredibly dickish of you.

If someone says that "seeing a scene where someone is powerless while things they do not consent to are being done to them" triggers rape flashbacks .. well, whether that's your experience or not, STFU.

This.

DA

I think you're really, really, really misreading what that anon said. Reread the comment they were responding to.

That scene is so rape it makes rape look like a wannabe of this. Do I ever understand why the OP used it.

This comment really looks like they're saying that this scene makes actual rape just look like a 'wannabe'. Whether or not they intend to, the commenter comes across as trivializing actual rape. They're not saying that rape scenes aren't as triggering as this scene, they're not even saying that rape scenes are just 'wannabes' in comparison to that scene, they're saying that rape in reality is just a 'wannabe' compared to that scene. That's... kind of really insensitive?

shoved his dick into Tony[...] thereby making it rape

Please stop trivializing real sexual trauma

Congratulations, you win the "rushing to score SJW points off the speck in somebody else's eye and tripping over the two-by-four you just planted in your own" award for the day. Go sit on a fucking cactus.

Signed,
Someone who was raped by another woman, with nary a dick in sight, and must've missed the memo that nobody is allowed to use tongue-in-cheek hyperbole as soon as rape enters the discussion. Wait, did I get taken off the mailing list because there's no Real Sexual Trauma until dicks are involved?

First, not everyone reacts to rape the same way. For some people removing a pacemaker (it's not a pacemaker btw it's an electromagnet that prevents the shrapnel from ripping Tony's heart apart) would be more traumatizing than a rape - the fact that you don't feel that way doesn't mean that someone is trivializing rape when they think something else is equally or more traumatic.

Second, not all attempted murder is comparable from a forced intimacy perspective.

Not applicable in the Ironman case - Certain stabbing murders contain a sexual drive in the murder.

Applicable in the Ironman case - Paralyzing someone and then removing a life saving device that is embedding in you after slicing their shirt (because lifting it wasn't possible?) and then leaving you to die slowly as the shrapnel rips apart your heart is very intimate and it is someone else controlling your body and it's reactions.

Not quite the same as someone shooting you from behind and killing you instantly.

Not to mention the dialogue. All of it, especially the line about the goose that laid the golden egg, reminding Tony he meant absolutely nothing to Stane except as an object that possessed attributes Stane wanted. Or the fact that the dialogue was spoken while he was bent over Tony with his face inches away while growling in his ear and getting immense pleasure out of taking his sweet time with it using his power over Tony to hold the reactor right in front of Tony's eyes and force him to stare at it, and casually touching him and lounging right next to him to show how much power he had and how powerless Tony was to make a move or stop him and intentionally psychologically hurting Tony as much as possible while staring into his eyes and grinning as if to see how much terror he could produce.

And then there was the way the scene was filmed. The camera angles and framing to put Tony as far down as possible. The position Tony was lying in, on his back, completely exposed, staring up at Stane. Oh, and the blood trickling out of his ears. And that tiny jerk and gasp he made when Stane took what he wanted from his body after stripping away all its autonomy.

Yeah, I don't know why someone might be reminded of rape from seeing that. Rape isn't about the sexual act, it's about everything else associated with the act.

Oh my god, anon. I feel like crying.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Actual rape is not a 'wannabe' of a fictional situation. Really.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure they meant actual rape scenes.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Then they should have actually written that.
