FOOD MISHAPS

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello, F!S. I just accidentally got jalapeno up my nose.

It's really horrendously stupid. I made a salad that included jalapenos, and I naturally got jalapeno juice on my fingers. Then, my nose itched...and I scratched it, without thinking. Now, my left nostril is burning like a motherfucker and I'm cursing my stupidity.

Has something of a similar nature ever happened to you?

Ooffff that sucks. Getting hot shit in those mucus-membrane-y places is never, never, never good. I ate half a raw habanero once, that's the worst it's ever been for me.

I've heard stories of people who had a similar thing happen, except in a more... uh... private location. So at least that didn't happen to you!

Ugggh I've heard many a story of that, as well. I've never got a foodly irritant down there, but...we did once use a lube that had rather unfortunate effects, so I can commiserate with those folks!

Put your nose into some cold milk!

I got Sracha in my eye once...Very, very stupid on my part :)

I once sneezed while eating broccoli.... That was not a fun experience... took forever to blow it all out of my nose.

Re: FOOD MISHAPS

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I hate when that happens. I've never done it with broccoli, but I've definitely done it with other food-stuffs. The worst was a bit of pasta.

No, but an ex-boyfriend once had a mishap after fixing something with habaneros in it. He thought he'd cleaned his hands well enough after, but discovered when he went to take a leak later that... apparently he hadn't.

Ever since, I've been glad I don't hold parts of me to pee.

I do not have male parts, but...

...my goodness, do I feel for him.

Not an injury, but there was a time when I did not know that citric acid would curdle milk. I knew that milk and lemon juice were both things that people put in tea so I figured clearly I could use both at once and that would be the ultimate tea experience.

I have done this as well.

Oops.

But it's awesome in homemade macaroni and cheese.

While squeezing a lime into my Pho bowl, it squirted into my eye. And my contact.

I was an hour away from home without any contact solution.

Ouch.

Sometimes when I sneeze while eating rice, the rice goes up my nose and comes out when I sneeze later. WHAT. THE. FUCK.

Re: FOOD MISHAPS

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, if I snort-inhale, the rice goes back down my throat. It's easier to deal with that way than trying to blow it out the nose.

If I'm really unlucky, the rice goes down my windpipe instead.

When I was around ten-ish one of the kids from my neighbourhood told the rest of us kids that we just had to try those red bell peppers his mom bought. Obviously what we assumed to be bell peppers were actually chili peppers, and when my eyes teared up because of the heat I stupidly wiped my eyes with my hand.

And yes, it was the same hand in which I had held the chili pepper. My whole face was burning and felt kind of swollen. I don't think I stopped crying buckets for well over an hour. That shit hurt like hell. D:

Ex-boyfriend took me out to a Thai restaurant and ordered an appetizer whose name escapes me, but it was described as "Thai bar food" and eaten with the fingers. And it had slivers of dried hot peppers in it. And I wasn't used to hot food then, so my eyes began to water. So I wiped them with my fingers, as you do...Ex boyfriend thought the result was funny, which is one of the reasons he's now ex.

Oo that sounds bad. Glad it was just your nose, though, and not an itch on your eye.

Once I was cooking dinner and had left the fork I was using in the pan. It's the kind of fork with a metal head and non-metal handle. I pick up the fork - which, from the handle, does not feel hot - and go to clean it by licking the food bits off. It took four days for my tongue to get back to normal.

Once I wanted to make some hot chocolate. I got out a mug and then must have gotten distracted because I wound up putting the mug in the microwave without pouring any milk in the mug first. I did not realize this until the microwave beeped and I reached in to grab the now insanely-hot, empty mug. Fortunately, I only just touched it with my finger tips before my brain got the signal to let go, but the heat actually flattened out my finger prints on that hand and I had no texture on my finger tips for about a week.

I have more than once mistaken salt for sugar in baking. And then took a big delicious bite of my salt-cookies. AAAAAARGHHHHHH.

I mistook horseradish for coleslaw (hey, the restaurant was dim!) and took a coleslaw sized forkful of it. Couldn't taste anything for the rest of the night.

Uh. Yes. Jalapenos, on my period, tampon.... So not fun. I actually washed my hands four or five times first, too.

Re: FOOD MISHAPS

I was cutting up a lemon once, while holding said lemon, and cut right into my hand. The cutting board is your friend. Citric acid in knife wounds is not. And I've rubbed my eyes after cutting chili peppers before--apparently, even washing my hands with lots of cold water and soap, then oil, then more soap and hot water didn't get rid of all the capsaicin.

I had a near food mishap that I now find very amusing. My sister gave me some flax oil, and I very nearly stir-fried vegetables in it. Luckily, I Googled it first to see if there was anything one should know about cooking with flax oil.
