YANA, anon. I don't get full-on panic-attack triggered, but the set of things that make me feel all squodgy and upset doesn't usually involve graphic rape scenes. Actually I think the surest way to make me feel sick to my stomach is to have one character blithely steamrollering over another character's boundaries and developing selective deafness to all signs of discomfort, especially if the text doesn't mark it out as rapey or ICKYBADWRONG... it's that sense that you're sitting on top of a careening trainwreck waiting to happen and you can see exactly where this is going even if the author can't--it stokes the imagination much more than seeing the trainwreck itself. Or, IDK, like trying to focus a pair of binoculars; too close in is just as blurry as too far away. I was reading non-con fic within a week or two afterwards with no ill effects because the situation bore very little resemblance to what had happened to me, but I almost had to walk out of an excellent performance of Così fan tutte a month later because the tension and ugliness underlying it were so well played that I thought I was going to throw up.

I do find it oddly comforting, though, when a scene pings me as rapey and then the text takes it seriously. There are a couple episodes of Doctor Who that I will actually rewatch if I'm feeling upset over this shit, because even though the connection is never made explicitly, the monster o' the week is pretty rapey and the characters totally fly off the handle at the undertones of violation and... IDK, it's like the show is giving me a hug and a bit of validation for being upset. (OTOH, some other episodes of Who now skeeve me out massively. Kind of a mixed bag.)

Random anon, here.

There are a couple episodes of Doctor Who that I will actually rewatch...

May I ask which ones? I'm legitimately intrigued and haven't watched every episode yet. I assume Midnight's one of them, but I could be mistaken.

Yup. Midnight is one of my favorite Who episodes ever, even if it's like demolishing half a bar of 80% dark chocolate in one go. On the other end of the scale, The Idiot's Lantern is 100% spun-sugar cotton candy fluff, and the monster didn't even ping me as particularly skeevy... until Rose showed up without a face and Ten flipped his shit, not just that she'd been monster'd but that she'd been dehumanized and left lying in the street. And I gotta admit, by that reading, the intensity of the "you did what? oh, I will END YOU" reaction is pretty gratifying.

As for episodes that are actually nausea-inducing to rewatch... Journey's End. I am genuinely baffled that Russell T Davies could write a pitch-perfect episode about mindrape and then go on to cap off his series finale with the Doctor forcibly erasing a companion's memory while she struggles and screams at him to stop. And write it as tragic rather than, you know, skin-crawling fucked-up levels of disturbing.

ugh this, so much. at that point i start thinking 'god i hope the writer was aware of the skeeviness and this character's bullshit gets pulled up.'
