As a person with an, er, colorful medical history, I get this. I wouldn't go as far as to say it "triggered" me, and I don't excpect the world to antipcate every trigger; but this scene definitely got a (not bright & happy) reaction.

What is happening in this scene? It looks like someone is threatening Robert Downy Jr with a light bulb.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's from Iron Man (1) - the Bad Guy is taking out the electromagnet that's implanted in his chest to keep shrapnel from reaching Tony / RDJ's heart.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That lightbulb he invented to keep himself alive. Also, he's paralyzed, the guy stealing it is his mentor, and the dialogue of the scene is creepy as fuck.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Not just his mentor, but his second father figure (Tony has shitty luck with father figures...)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the part in the first Iron Man movie where Stane takes Tony's arc reactor out and leaves him basically helpless on the floor as Stane goes off to do... evil things. I don't actually remember what his plan was. Just that he was eeeeevvvvuullll.

He went off to go kill Pepper, because she'd found out about his evil schemes.

That scene is so rape it makes rape look like a wannabe of this. Do I ever understand why the OP used it.

That's understandable. Sometimes more subtle things can hit you harder than the overt stuff. I'm sorry you have to deal with this, anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You say your friends are (overly-)considerate, which means they obviously have deep feelings for you. That means they understand feelings. I would try to explain in terms of people being able to put their own meaning into abstract art easier than something that is photorealistic. If you don't have all the lines, your brain fills in the blanks. In your case, this means someone being forced to do something that isn't an explicit rape-act is easier for your brain to connect to because there aren't explicit differences for you to see that make it NOT your experience.

If they care about you, and it seems that they do, I think they'll try to understand and be supportive.

Also, I'm going to put a *hugs*, here, anon, if you want to take advantage of it. I'm sorry you went through such an experience.

That fucking scene.

That scene was literally rapey-er than the vast majority of actual rape scenes I've seen. *shudder*

As for the rest of your secret, I get that. Sometimes, concepts and ideas and metaphors can be much more relatable and leave a much bigger impact than explicit depictions of specific circumstances/issues/events/actions. That's why metaphor is used in fiction so often.

As for your friends...I'd say just tell them exactly what you said in this secret. I think they'll probably understand.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally feel that (reaction, at least to this scene in particular). This scene made me more viscerally uncomfortable than pretty much anything else I've seen lately.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand triggers as I don't think I have any, so I'm not sure what can or can't induce one. However, this scene was just downright uncomfortable for, I think, everyone. Even I squirmed and frowned during this scene. And even though it isn't sexual, this scene, I feel, is even worse than outright killing the man. It's slow, it's painful and Tony knows what's happening and can't do a damn thing about it. So yeah, I can see why it would upset.

YANA, anon. I don't get full-on panic-attack triggered, but the set of things that make me feel all squodgy and upset doesn't usually involve graphic rape scenes. Actually I think the surest way to make me feel sick to my stomach is to have one character blithely steamrollering over another character's boundaries and developing selective deafness to all signs of discomfort, especially if the text doesn't mark it out as rapey or ICKYBADWRONG... it's that sense that you're sitting on top of a careening trainwreck waiting to happen and you can see exactly where this is going even if the author can't--it stokes the imagination much more than seeing the trainwreck itself. Or, IDK, like trying to focus a pair of binoculars; too close in is just as blurry as too far away. I was reading non-con fic within a week or two afterwards with no ill effects because the situation bore very little resemblance to what had happened to me, but I almost had to walk out of an excellent performance of Così fan tutte a month later because the tension and ugliness underlying it were so well played that I thought I was going to throw up.

I do find it oddly comforting, though, when a scene pings me as rapey and then the text takes it seriously. There are a couple episodes of Doctor Who that I will actually rewatch if I'm feeling upset over this shit, because even though the connection is never made explicitly, the monster o' the week is pretty rapey and the characters totally fly off the handle at the undertones of violation and... IDK, it's like the show is giving me a hug and a bit of validation for being upset. (OTOH, some other episodes of Who now skeeve me out massively. Kind of a mixed bag.)

Random anon, here.

There are a couple episodes of Doctor Who that I will actually rewatch...

May I ask which ones? I'm legitimately intrigued and haven't watched every episode yet. I assume Midnight's one of them, but I could be mistaken.

ugh this, so much. at that point i start thinking 'god i hope the writer was aware of the skeeviness and this character's bullshit gets pulled up.'

Ah. Hm. I can't say I've ever been in your position, but I have been at people's mercy and totally helpless before. (Fainted and had a seizure in a hospital in a foreign country, funtimes.)

Basically what I boil it down to is the sensation of acute helplessness, panic, and dread. Seeing it mirrored in someone else reminds you of being in that situation, regardless of the immediate circumstances.

There are lots of ways to be helpless and potentially taken advantage of, and scenes where it's depicted most honestly and true to reality is what sets you off. So that's how I would explain it to them.

Just say, "Hey, look, what happened to me happened to me, but what reminds me of it is when people are able to depict/reflect how I felt at the time it happened, not necessarily the exact circumstances themselves."

I have a history of being exposed to pretty brutal violence, so what sets me off is when people act truly aggressively and signal that they're going to attack someone. It doesn't have to mirror the circumstances that I was first exposed to the violence.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I think the scene was really designed to make the viewer feel what Tony's feeling. Whereas every rape scene I've seen has emotional distance, making the viewer a detached witness, or even a voyeur.

Oh man, THIS. 100% this. I didn't even realize that about most rape scenes in media until this comment, but that's so damn true.

Maybe try using this scene/movie/ect to explain your feelings? If you explain this was a lot closer to your rape experience than most actual rape scenes, and why, they might get it if there is a tangible example/comparison (like this Iron Man scene) to work with.

I don't think you should have to worry about your friends not getting why this scene upsets you.

I have never been assaulted but I did get uncomfortable watching this scene, more than many other violent or rape-context scenes (which are often played down and "fade to black" to be more bearable to the viewer).

It's the whole combination of physical helplessness + life threatening situation + someone you trusted who is damaging your physical integrity (performing heart surgery is as far it gets) AND enjoying it + the way it's filmed.
So your friends should understand that if you explain.

Jesus, I'm sorry anon, that's not something someone would have thought to warn people about, and that must have been awful to run into blind.

I was both horrified and guilty excited by that scene. Strong hero men being made helpless really push my buttons.
