That's the thought process people have about a lot of things.

But the cold reality is that most of us, if put in a position similar to Shinji's, would completely freak out. A lot of the people who think they'd be BAMFs would be pissing their pants and crying in a corner.

It's comforting to think that we wouldn't be like the "realistic" characters. But we would.

THIS. I also think that quite a few of the people who say that actually know they would be the Shinji (maybe some already identify with him and that's why they hate him) and are deluding themselves.

Sure, maybe a bunch of the haters would do things different. But it's hard to believe they wouldn't end up fucked in some other way. All the badasses in this fandom still have issues and/or end up dead.

When a friend of mine came back from Afghanistan, he said most of the men in his company were able to more or less keep their heads to together (hence all the training), but he was stunned not by who wilted and couldn't take it, but who turned out to be completely bloodless, or ruthless, or seemed to be enjoying themselves far, far too much.
