Think about it this way, anon.

If you vote for Romney and he wins, you have to listen to them talk about how horrible and evil the Republicans are for the next four years.

(I plan to vote for Obama because I just can't support Romney but I hate smug people as much as you.)

I'm not voting for either. The both disgust me. I really do believe in the peoples' right to vote so I will be there to vote on a bunch of propositions, but I'm leaving the presidential one blank. I don't want to have a hand in either of them getting elected.

Vote third party, duder. Plenty of options, no matter what your political persuasion.

There ARE third parties? This is honestly news to me.

(No, I'm not from the US, before someone eats me for being ignorant on their politics.)

There are third parties, but the structure of the US political system makes it essentially impossible for them to attain power - in particular, it's almost impossible for them to actually win the Presidency. But third parties exist. The main non-mainstream parties are the Green Party (left of center) and the Libertarian Party (Libertarian), and there's a few others as well. They have some success in local elections - my home city (San Francisco) has a very popular Green Party, local races here are usually between the Green Party and the Democrats. Just no presence nationally.

the usa has a two-party system that makes it sincerely impossible for any other party to win, but there are tons of other parties - green, libertarian, constitution, national socialist movement, etc.

a lot of people in the states who don't like either major candidate (republican or democrat) end up voting the "lesser evil" as hinted at above. i don't really like either major candidate myself; i voted john mccain in 2008 and given the chance to do it all over, i would (i insist he would have made a great president). that being said, i am likely voting for obama in november this year because he hasn't done a horrible job. the thing that ultimately swayed me? i pictured myself writing a letter to both candidates explaining my life situation and asking for them to keep me - and others like me - in their thoughts regarding student aid. i foresaw obama taking this to heart, whereas i imagined romney doing nothing to help me (or us, rather). things like this are important to me.

McCain's main problem was probably his VP. Romney has many problems, and his VP is a major one... Their stances on college education in particular are indeed problematic!

Just weighing in as a non USian, so feel free to ignore, but there ARE differences between the presidential candidates, and inasofar as they have power, that's going to make a real difference to those more marginalised than you probably are. So for others' sake, consider voting for the one that is less overtly hateful towards the very disenfranchised.

I understand your cynicism and frustration though, and I really wish the US had preferential voting (so that third parties had a chance of influence) like my country.

Don't be ridiculous, anon. They're going to talk about how evil Republicans are regardless. It's what blowhards do.
