Not one of my conservative friends has mentioned anything about the upcoming US election on their facebook, but my liberal friends keep clogging up my feed with these incredibly smug posts about how their position is the best and how horrible and evil the opposition is. Then everybody who comments on those posts goes around congratulating each other on how right they all are.

While I in principal agree with a lot of what they're posting, they're just being SO FUCKING ANNOYING about it that it's making want to vote against them out of spite.

I have it bombarding from both sides on facebook. I generally hate when people talk about politics on facebook so I'm just like "can you guys pipe down over there? You realize no one is listening to you, right? Right?"

There is a time and a place for talking politics and it involves neither the dinner table nor Facebook.

"While I in principal agree with a lot of what they're posting, they're just being SO FUCKING ANNOYING about it that it's making want to vote against them out of spite."

And now you understand the terrible secret of American politics.

Think about it this way, anon.

If you vote for Romney and he wins, you have to listen to them talk about how horrible and evil the Republicans are for the next four years.

(I plan to vote for Obama because I just can't support Romney but I hate smug people as much as you.)

I'm not voting for either. The both disgust me. I really do believe in the peoples' right to vote so I will be there to vote on a bunch of propositions, but I'm leaving the presidential one blank. I don't want to have a hand in either of them getting elected.

Vote third party, duder. Plenty of options, no matter what your political persuasion.

Re: Think about it this way, anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
There ARE third parties? This is honestly news to me.

(No, I'm not from the US, before someone eats me for being ignorant on their politics.)

Re: Think about it this way, anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
There are third parties, but the structure of the US political system makes it essentially impossible for them to attain power - in particular, it's almost impossible for them to actually win the Presidency. But third parties exist. The main non-mainstream parties are the Green Party (left of center) and the Libertarian Party (Libertarian), and there's a few others as well. They have some success in local elections - my home city (San Francisco) has a very popular Green Party, local races here are usually between the Green Party and the Democrats. Just no presence nationally.

the usa has a two-party system that makes it sincerely impossible for any other party to win, but there are tons of other parties - green, libertarian, constitution, national socialist movement, etc.

a lot of people in the states who don't like either major candidate (republican or democrat) end up voting the "lesser evil" as hinted at above. i don't really like either major candidate myself; i voted john mccain in 2008 and given the chance to do it all over, i would (i insist he would have made a great president). that being said, i am likely voting for obama in november this year because he hasn't done a horrible job. the thing that ultimately swayed me? i pictured myself writing a letter to both candidates explaining my life situation and asking for them to keep me - and others like me - in their thoughts regarding student aid. i foresaw obama taking this to heart, whereas i imagined romney doing nothing to help me (or us, rather). things like this are important to me.

McCain's main problem was probably his VP. Romney has many problems, and his VP is a major one... Their stances on college education in particular are indeed problematic!

Just weighing in as a non USian, so feel free to ignore, but there ARE differences between the presidential candidates, and inasofar as they have power, that's going to make a real difference to those more marginalised than you probably are. So for others' sake, consider voting for the one that is less overtly hateful towards the very disenfranchised.

I understand your cynicism and frustration though, and I really wish the US had preferential voting (so that third parties had a chance of influence) like my country.

Don't be ridiculous, anon. They're going to talk about how evil Republicans are regardless. It's what blowhards do.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-06 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's probably because most conservatives have their eyes screwed shut waiting for this whole thing to be over so they can pretend it never happened.

But yeah... I may or may not have lied and told someone I would vote for Romney if they mentioned Obama to me one. more. time.

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-10-06 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Pff don't feel bad, I would lie about a lot of things to get out of a political discussion with a party zealot.

"Oh shoot, I think I left the. . .house on fire I'll have to deal with that and never come back."

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
My favorite line lately is to say, "Who?", "...who?", "No, never heard of him. What movie was he in?".

If I'm in a trollin' mood and it doesn't look like anything will shut them up? If they support Romney I claim I'm voting for him because I want polygamy to be legal. Obama? Because I think a Muslim president will find a way to end the war on terror.

Hahahahahaha ok I add this to the reasons that you're awesome.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-06 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Face screw up but no one has tried to talk me out of voting for their guy yet!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care who wins, as long as they have the chance of meeting after everything's over so that thay can have steamy hate-sex in the Oval Office.

I'll buy Obama as a mechanophile.

I'm also pretty darned tired of politics, but at this rate even if it was revealed that Obama was sacrificing babies to Satan, I don't think I could justify even pretending I could vote for Romney, or in fact not vote against him. :P

Which may be why the conservatives I know have also largely been quiet. I don't think anyone likes this guy. I just have the one tea partier aunt who posts a bunch of "WHY ISN'T THE LAMESTREAM MEDIA REPORTING ON THIS?!?!?" conspiracy theory blog links about evil things Obama has allegedly done. Even she doesn't seem to really support Romney over him anyway. :P

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
In principle, not "in principal"

/my one homophone pet peeve

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oops. Sorry!

(The one grammatical thing that usually gets me is "but yet".)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
No worries. :) Principle/principal is actually a really common mistake, so I try not to be mean about pointing it out.

as someone who is more left-leaning than right, the vast majority of people i personally have talked to regarding the election who have been obnoxious about it are liberals. i can't really think of one republican/conservative who has so much as been offensive. my american presidency class is like 90% republicans and they're all very level-headed and neutral when it comes to evaluating the candidates; for instance, they give credit where it's due and respect the president despite planning on voting against him. in my national defense policy class there's a self-proclaimed republican who sits beside me and he's literally the most respectful debater i have ever seen in my entire life. what's more, the rest of the class consists of liberals and they never hesitate to be rude to him.

that being said there are definitely a lot of outspoken and obnoxious conservatives out there but in a college setting, at least for me, that's harder to come by. asshole liberals are plentiful though.

and while i love tumblr i am really sick of some of the people i follow and their political rudeness. honestly i find that people are more prone to be rude when they don't really know what they're talking about (what's the point in being rude if you can easily back up your thoughts?). whatever, i really shouldn't care since i'm a moderate independent, but this is the kind of behaviour that could - and probably sometimes does - deter less passionate/knowledgeable undecideds from your side.
