I think that largely depends on where you hang out at. The fandom is pretty decent on the main comm on Livejournal and on the kink meme, but boy, have I seen some idiots on Tumblr and Fanfiction.Net.

I'm not ashamed to admit how much I like the manga. It's funny and cute and heartbreaking, and it managed to get me interested in history and in learning about history again. That's worth a lot to me.

And yep, I'm shipping, too, but I don't hang out in the fandom.

I always had a good time on the fandom. but then I stick to hetalia.livejournal and the author's blog.

We had the voice actors of Germany and France in the English version at my local con this year so we had a lot of Hetalia fans at the con. The fangirls were mostly okay, though? Hyperactive and teenager, but...well, I used to be like that, too, and I didn't notice them doing anything particularly rude or anything that upset me.

The only thing I regret is deciding to watch part of Hetalia in one of the video rooms. There was so much squealing I couldn't even really hear the darn show! Never again!

But anyway, like what you like, and don't feel too ashamed for it, I say. Some people will maybe automatically assume you're an annoying fangirl because of it but people that are quick to assume like that are probably best avoided, anyway. (Case in point: I don't particularly care for HS, but a lot of people I know that are super awesome are Homestucks. I don't really care, even if the fandom is insane and crazy to me, they're still cool.)

-shrugs- It depends on where you hang out, and general luck, I guess. I tend to hang out on lj, but I've run across some crazies there - and some of those experiences have certainly colored certain parts of the fandom for me! So I can definitely get where you're coming from, OP.

I don't read it, but I save the well drawn yaoi because it's hot. The only one I can really identify is America anyway and I think Germany.

Dude, just enjoy the series. Don't worry what people say. Yeah, there are some obnoxious, embarrassing fans, but those exist in every fandom.

Also jfc who cares if you ship or not? So long as you aren't saying things like "I wish the American Revolution never happened because I don't want Alfred to make Iggy sad!", it's not a problem to enjoy the pairings.
