I go back and forth about Green Lantern: some days I feel like it's a guilty pleasure, other days, I'm genuinely embarassed that I tried to enjoy it. I still don't think it deserves the hate it gets---it's just mediocre.

I hate that the internet decided Ryan Reynolds is horrible because Green Lantern. If you actually watch the film, he's one of the best things in it. I find it hilarious that some reviewers treated Peter Sarsgaard like he was one of the best things in the film as Hector Hammond because he has lots of indie cred, when in fact his performance (and the way the script develops the character) was just really, really awful.

WHY do I have so many feelings about this?

I agree that some of the hate for this movie seems unnecessarily exaggerated, but I also agree about the movie itself being pretty damn mediocre. Still, I enjoyed Ryan as Hal enough that the movie wasn't a total fail for me. And IDG why one movie role would ruin an actor ~forever~, but then again this IS the internet, so when I hear that kind of ridiculous hate I just roll my eyes and move on.

People said Peter Sarsgaard was great in this movie? I thought he had one of the worst performances in it, and I know the guy can act.

Mediocre is the best way to describe Green Lantern, but I think that's part of why I feel so negatively about it. Even if it's not the most awful movie ever made, it still hurts given that I know a Green Lantern movie could have been so much better.

I never checked out the response to the movie though, so I had no idea people were being harsh on Reynolds for that :(

I'm the anon from above, and this is one of the main reasons I flip-flop about it. I remember watching it in the theater (the only time I saw it) and seeing little shades of the much better movie GL could have been among all the mess, like in the scenes on Oa. If those had had a lot more screentime and there'd been a lot less stuff on Earth, the film probably would have been infinitely better.

The special effects were well-nigh unwatchably bad, and I have issues with the whole "chosen one" trope as it's played out in the script. Other than that, I agree that the rest of the movie is just on the crappy side of mediocre rather than execrable, and I think all of the actors (including Reynolds and Sarsgaard both) were doing the best they could with the mess they were given.

I think the thing that gets me about Green Lantern is that if I hadn't been given Secret Origin to read by my boyfriend months beforehand, I'm not sure I would've known wtf was happening. I hate how they changed what happens to Hector Hammond as well. He was probably one of the most disappointing aspects of the whole thing for me tbh.

Having said that, I still sort of enjoyed it on the whole. Go figure.

All I wanted from Green Lantern was Ryan Reynolds looking like he was wearing nothing but glowing body paint, and that's what I got. :D
