Shooting at University of South Alabama.
To me this sounds like excessive force mixed with drunken/drugged stupidity that ended in a tragedy. One thing that bothers me is that the student was only 18 and 140 lbs, so it really shouldn't have been difficult to physically subdue him if the officer had only called for backup. They were right outside of the station!
Anyway, everyone here is either screaming 'Police Brutality!' or 'PCP psycho!' and it's a huge shitfest. I thought I would ask for some impartial discussion from my fandom friends, even though obviously this is beyond off topic.
Re: Shooting at University of South Alabama.
(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)The only thing I question, which is not something in this case in particular but in police and military practice in general, is why always shoot the chest/to kill? Why not shoot him in the leg or some other place that would hopefully subdue yet less likely to kill?
Re: Shooting at University of South Alabama.
(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)Because aiming for center mass is the easiest target to hit when in a life threatening situation. Aiming for an arm or leg - especially when the person is moving rapidly and easily be a miss and who knows where that bullet might end up.

Re: Shooting at University of South Alabama.
(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)if you think they could have subdued the guy, you should be arguing that they shouldn't have shot him at all. if they're going to be shooting, they should be shooting to kill, first because that's what guns are for, and second because, practically speaking, it's incredibly hard to shoot someone in the leg IRL.
Re: Shooting at University of South Alabama.
Limbs are packed with blood vessels, bullets often 'skip' along bone (famous case of a cop here who was shot in the wrist at a ninety degree angle, and had the bullet come out his other armpit), and the torso actually has some dead space.
Re: Shooting at University of South Alabama.
Seriously, these people on bath salts turn into fucking psychotic doucheholes. One of the people near my town was running around the highway hijacking cars, then crashing them, getting out, hijacking more cars and crashing them. It was insane.
Then there was in the guy in Ontario who was trying to eat a dog alive in the middle of the street.
Law enforcement has been very very twitchy about these guys.
Re: Shooting at University of South Alabama.
They haven't released a toxicology report, so we have no clue if the kid was on anything, or if he was psychotic and off his meds, or just realllly drunk.

SLEEPING WITH A KNIFE TONIGHT.

*not walking alone at night for a while*
Why weren't you before?
Also don't walk alone at night ever, it's a bad idea. :( What would I do without my FS BFF if you got jumped.
BECAUSE COPS
OH KK, I WON'T EVER LEAVE YOUUUU <3
NO EXCUSE
I mean, my city has a pretty sizable crime rate, and so far I haven't been frisked for weapons, so you'll probably be okay.
I HOPE NOT. I might have to come down there and stab a bitch elsewise. Wow that sounded like an abusive stalker. Uhm. Well, you know what I mean.
GUNS ARE FUNS
I KNOW WHAT YOU MEANT. I would also stab you if you left me! :D
FAIR ENOUGH
I'm so glad we understand each other so well. :D
CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT
Re: NO EXCUSE
I've actually been trained by LEOs, and can almost guarantee I'm taller and sturdier then you.
I would get repeatedly fucked up, because if you pull a knife you're getting cut up - especially if the other person knows what they're doing. And it automatically escalates everything the minute it enters play.
In fact I urge you to see if you can get yourself on a self defence course, and see exactly how this would actually play out.
Re: NO EXCUSE
I'm going to say here that our experiences are fundamentally different, but it's not like what I do should be immediately discounted. I've never been assaulted by someone looking to rape or mug me. Maybe I am somewhat misguided in my ability to defend myself because of my dearth in that area, I don't know.
But the experiences I have had have dictated that I always have something on me to a.) defend myself, or b.) deter whatever is attacking me. The knife is there for backup, not so that I can whip it out every time I feel threatened.
Re: NO EXCUSE
Re: BECAUSE COPS
It's weird to remember that this shit doesn't fly in other areas. And creepy in your situation with police. Yikes.
