Uh. No. No that doesn't count.

If you spent years living in that place with 90+ temperature with no way of moving out, and no hope in the future of leaving, and no adequate way to keep yourself cool and alive, then yes.

But those are my standards, as someone who has lived since birth in a place like that during the summer months, and no AC.

I'm not going to argue with you, mainly because I have no idea what point you're going for here, but your reply seemed slightly snotty, so let me just say that you don't know the circumstances of why I was living there, or the numerous other problems with the situation (which did last for years, but weren't so much "living without" as "learning to live with"). So if this sort of situation is not what you're looking for, maybe be more specific with your question.

True, I'm not aware of the situation, and I'm sorry that I sounded snotty. From your description, it sounded like the kind of stuff a lot of people go through sporadically, like an AC or heater giving out, and not being able to fix it just yet, but in a few paychecks you can get it worked out.

That is what I'd call short term deprivation, and while it sucks and helps you value stuff even more, it's not quite the same as living it day by day for years on end, with no hope of it improving, and no hope of it changing. Just having to survive the stuff you're subjected to, rather than being equipped with the kind of stuff that will help you live comfortably during it.

From your reply, I'm getting that you've actually spent a good chunk of time not having the basic necessities, so I apologize for diminishing your experience.

If I were to be more specific, I guess I would have to say being deprived as more than a transient state, but a concurrent or repetitive cycle. As in, it's your life for the foreseeable future, or is so intense that you're not sure you can survive it with your level of accessibility.

NAYRT

What are you trying to accomplish by policing the deprivation olympics? And honestly, it's probably awkward to talk about your experiences with other people, not because they would judge you for being unable to shower everyday, but because you are judging them by taking it upon yourself to invalidate their experiences when they try to empathize with you as best they can.

diff

There's no deprivation olympics because to a lot of people worldwide this doesn't count as a deprivation but a minor inconvenience.

I agree with you. I live in a place like that and I don't know a single person who has air conditioning at home, so thinking of it as a deprivation of some sort is odd to me.

I'm the anon below with the woodstove farming parents and I agree. My family has air conditioning now but it is still considered a luxury, an add-on, rather than a necessity like a working stove. In fact, we didn't have a washing machine when I grew up either. Me and my gran wash everything by hand on a washboard. The only major appliances we had were a gas stove and a refrigerator, and that was the same for almost every family in our city.

I guess it's different for us who grew up without and learned to manage.
