I agree with you. I live in a place like that and I don't know a single person who has air conditioning at home, so thinking of it as a deprivation of some sort is odd to me.

I'm the anon below with the woodstove farming parents and I agree. My family has air conditioning now but it is still considered a luxury, an add-on, rather than a necessity like a working stove. In fact, we didn't have a washing machine when I grew up either. Me and my gran wash everything by hand on a washboard. The only major appliances we had were a gas stove and a refrigerator, and that was the same for almost every family in our city.

I guess it's different for us who grew up without and learned to manage.
