Wait, where in the world is the ratio of baby boys to girls skewed in favour of girls?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I'm aware, the ratio at birth naturally skews slightly male to make up for the higher death rate of baby boys, then by the time people are teens it's about equal, then without modern antenatal and birth care, the ratio skews to men again (unless there's a war on, or it's a mining community), and then in old age it skews female because women who survive to menopause tend to outlive men, less heart disease and so on.

Unnatural effects on the birthrate tend to skew it further male, not female.

The 49:51 at birth is female:male.

In countries with little war and low maternal death rates, and decent health and safety regulation, and an aging population, you expect a close ratio that skews slightly female, more so as the population ages.

That's where I got it from: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/sep/12/gender.sciencenews

Yeah, that's bullshit. The studies that look at this are generally looking ratios that go from 51:49 to 101:100, so boys still actually outnumber girls. And even then, it's only a few communities that see that effect. There's no particular evidence that there even is an effect, let alone that it can be attributed to anything: the concensus is generally that it's something to continue researching, but any effect found would be tiny, because if it were a big effect we'd see it easily already.

The Guardian's science reporting is particularly awful in general, because they think they're scientific but are generally both innumerate and scientifically illiterate (with the single noble exception of Ben Goldacre, who doesn't write their actual science reporting). This story was one of those periodic journalistic idiocies that spring up, like when all the papers reported that the y-chromosome was "degenerating" at such a rate that it would be useless in a century, or when they all reported that blonde people were going extinct.

Heh, the more you know!

Thanks for the info.

BPA

Look for the effects of Bisphenol A concerning fertility and influence on gender. And than realize that everybody in your community consumes BPA alle the time...

Oh, so you can name a country where the number of baby girls born is greater than the number of baby boys? And this country used to have more baby boys born, but after being exposed to large doses of BPA this switched?

There is a huge global problem with countries where abortion is readily available, family sizes are small, and there is a cultural preference for boys: those countries abort girls like crazy. There are actual countries where baby girls are at high risk of being killed, gendercide, because people prefer boys. Name me a single country where the number of baby boys born outweighs the number of girls.
