Re: Wait, where in the world is the ratio of baby boys to girls skewed in favour of girls?

That's where I got it from: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/sep/12/gender.sciencenews

Re: Wait, where in the world is the ratio of baby boys to girls skewed in favour of girls?

Yeah, that's bullshit. The studies that look at this are generally looking ratios that go from 51:49 to 101:100, so boys still actually outnumber girls. And even then, it's only a few communities that see that effect. There's no particular evidence that there even is an effect, let alone that it can be attributed to anything: the concensus is generally that it's something to continue researching, but any effect found would be tiny, because if it were a big effect we'd see it easily already.

The Guardian's science reporting is particularly awful in general, because they think they're scientific but are generally both innumerate and scientifically illiterate (with the single noble exception of Ben Goldacre, who doesn't write their actual science reporting). This story was one of those periodic journalistic idiocies that spring up, like when all the papers reported that the y-chromosome was "degenerating" at such a rate that it would be useless in a century, or when they all reported that blonde people were going extinct.

Thanks for the info.
