I've seen it in certain femslash fandoms. Recently, there was a poll in some website/blog about which "suitor" fans preferred for one half of the non-canon OTP, so the fandom gathered the troops for everyone to vote for the "Other" option because it was outrageous that the other half of the OTP wasn't even included (even though the character that was the subject of the poll has never been established as anything other than straight). People were pretty riled up/offended over that, and not in a joking way. They even attacked the organizer of the poll when she dared to say that the pairing was never going to happen.

So yeah, certain people/fandoms do take it pretty far.
