I think sometimes inside jokes don't come across as jokes to people who aren't in on them, so someone saying, "HDU disparage their epic love!! >:(" and "Anyone who doesn't ship this must be bliiind!" can read as hostile rather than hyperbolic and lolzy when posted in a public space. And when this is pointed out, even people who were just being lolzy to start with may get defensive about their ship. I've definitely accidentally gotten into internet arguments that way.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. As I said, it's not like anyone outright asks whether it's serious or not, and no one with the inside joke shares the information to begin with. The curse of the internet; no one knows what you're doing unless you outright say it.

Exactly! Especially when there is so much hyperbole in places like tumblr that capslock becomes normal speech, so if you're coming from outside, it may look like EVERYONE IS JUST YELLING AT EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME.
