What I thought of with this secret is the people who seem honestly invested in their ship being the "right" one, which I have seen occasionally. It seems to happen in ship wars a lot. They seem to want to believe either that the ship will become explicitly canonical, or that the ship is the one "endorsed" by the writers, which I think is different from simply enjoying subtext that you see and using it to enhance your enjoyment of the ship.

I don't think what you're describing sounds annoying.
