That's how most people are interpreting the secret, so I'm probably wrong. I've just... never seen anyone do that, unless what's being described is different from what I'm thinking.

:Like -- as I mentioned in another comment, I think there are intentional double entendres in canon between Megatron and Starscream. Does that mean I think "it's canon?" Well, literally, no -- I don't think anything is "canon."

But in a less literal sense, I kind of do "think it's canon" -- I think the writers put easter eggs in for the shippers (of M/SS and other pairings) on purpose, to the point where someone saying those innuendoes are just me wanting to see what I enjoy might actually earn an eyeroll, depending on how douchey they're being about it.

This is my opinion, and I wouldn't bother to hide it. Does that make me one of these horribly annoying people? If it does, I... well. The thing to do would be apologize, but I'm not sure I have anything to apologize for, as I've simply held an opinion, not been mean to anyone.

Hence my confusion. Basically, tl;dr I do sometimes think writers intend subtext, and to me when they do it doesn't mean a pairing is canon (as it would be if the pairing were obvious and stated outright) but it doesn't quite mean it's "only fanon" to me either (as I see some pairings in my fandom that are very popular but that I can find no ground for in canon -- specifically, say, Jazz/Prowl. Very popular ship, but I've never seen them even seriously interact in canon, much less arguably-writer-intendedly-flirt. I don't think this makes the ship less legitimate, especially because any ship is subtext in the first place, but I do not think canon drops any hints, unless it be in a continuity I'm not familiar with.)

Am I the bad guy then? Personally I like to be aware of it when my opinions tick everyone off! ;-)

Oh, I see. Uh, I have. Met them, I mean. In fact, I've had real life friends who were like that and... one in particular would not leave me alone about it. They could not understand how I didn't care.

I think the crux of the problem is not what you're saying or your ideas behind them, merely how you define the term "canon" versus how the majority defines it, or at least the majority on F!S. You define canon a bit differently and include what I would term fanon into it.

I don't think you would piss anyone off if you're making off-hand comments or jokes and I don't think in light conversations you would either. I think, however, if you get into an in depth discussion with someone it might be in your best interest to define how you use the term canon and fanon.

However, if you're nice about it I don't think you would piss anyone off or be the "bad guy" anyway. I will just roll my eyes at people who deem things canon according to my definition and leave it be. It doesn't bother me too much. It's not really hurting me and they're not bothering me so it doesn't really matter. I am only bothered when these people insisting it's canon try to police other fans and how they interpret the story. Something I have come across a time or two to the point where the group that aggressively promotes their ship as canon has almost become synonymous with the group that hounds other fans into seeing things their way. That's when I have a problem because it's ruining my fun, which is what fandom is about to me.

I don't think you're that aggressive type. I've seen you around F!S, we've talked, and you've always been very civil and nice. So I don't think you'll have too much of a problem or be considered the 'bag guy'.

So yeah, as long as you clarify yourself when needed I don't think you'd ever really have a problem.

I hope I'm being clear.

What I thought of with this secret is the people who seem honestly invested in their ship being the "right" one, which I have seen occasionally. It seems to happen in ship wars a lot. They seem to want to believe either that the ship will become explicitly canonical, or that the ship is the one "endorsed" by the writers, which I think is different from simply enjoying subtext that you see and using it to enhance your enjoyment of the ship.

I don't think what you're describing sounds annoying.
