NS1: To be fair, from the Wikipedia summary it sounds an awful lot like the premise of Community. "Ragtag group of misfits meet each other at a specific place and learn that they're not so different." And since Community came first it's really easy for people to just say "oh it's just like this other thing that already exists."

I'm curious now as to whether this Go On show is any good, I've heard very little about it.

Yeah, this. I haven't seen Go On yet but from what I heard from people, the Community comparisons are more about the premise and the style - especially the Matthew Perry character's speeches - than about some kind of character-by-character comparison. It's like Community shorn of its pop-culture obsessions. And this is coming from people who liked the show, too.

I'd be more offended that it reduces people to race and gender regardless of how accurate it is.

I think Go On is a great show. I really appreciate that it's a comedy that's not afraid to focus on the sadness. While I love Community, I really don't think a comparison between the two is fair. Other than being funny, smart comedies that aren't afraid I focus on the sadder sides of the characters, they really have nothing in common.

Me too! Oh man, I love that mini-series so damn much -- aside from making me love Ben, the doomed love between Kaine and Louise pretty much broke my heart.

Say, where's that little reference panel from? I vaguely recognize it, but can't quite place the storyline/issue.

Well then, I guess I didn't recognize it after all -- 'cause that's news to me! I had no idea there was a new Scarlet Spider series, and after doing some quick googling I see that it's something I need to buy now. I more or less quit reading Spider-Man comics after they killed off Ben, that's how upset and pissed I was. But Kaine as Scarlet Spider...? Yeeeah, can't resist that.

I bet I could take any two works listed under "Ragtag Bunch of Misfits" and make equally substantial comparisons. These sorts of inter-work comparisons never seem to address the fact that it always requires leaving out a bunch of character traits from the characters of both works.
