I can get not wanting to dive head first into the the entire Marvel universe because, well, it is a universe and you are going to be there for a long, long time. But Deadpool is such a simple character. He's a mercenary who is insane and can't die no matter what you do to him. He always regenerates. Like that yellow cat only crazy and well armed. That's all you need to know. He is not that complicated. And because he is not complicated you can pick up any of the Deadpool graphic novels and go. They are like the comic form of Jason Statham's Crank movies. Pure popcorn fluff.

Wow. Really? Fuck you.

Really? Why? Because I said you can pick up any volume and go?

Are you really that allergic to comics? Do you think only geeks read them? Man, the hatred for superhero comics on F!S sometimes is really distasteful. It's weird how most of fandom on F!S can be so embracing EXCEPT when it comes to superhero comics.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Because you said he's a simple character.

But he is. I read the comics. How is he complex like Wolverine or Magneto? Deadpool is usually comic relief and/or the voice of the audience. Yes, he is complex that way but you are not going to be telling huge dramatic arcs using Deadpool. You are going to be using him to crossdress and blow things up. Usually at the same time.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
We've obviously read different comics then. Because if he were that simple and easy to get, the superfamily thing wouldn't be 100% shit and OOC.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Getting the character is one thing. Being able to properly write that character is another thing altogether.

And sorry if the other anon who talked to you hurt your little fanboy/girl feelings, but Deadpool is mainly a crack character. Nothing that much more to it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Stop embarrassing yourself, it's obvious you don't know a fuck about him.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Boohoo, I don't know everything about a comic book character - It must be true, because one of their fans told me so! Now my life will be RUINED!

It's clear that you don't read the latest Deadpool comics and are still holding onto a storyline that happened FIFTEEN YEARS ago. Which is a hundred years in Marvel years. Characters are reconned. Stoylines change. Deadpool of the 90's is not the same as he is now.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
He's still pure crack. Maybe with a deeper background. But crack.

(But actually, all superheroes are crack one way or the other. Deadpool's just a very pure brand.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it? Most people will tell you they know Spider-Man either as a high-school student or as a photographer in the Daily Bugle. It's been many, many years since he'd been either.

Those old stories defined the character for many. It's like that time in the 90's they tried to retconn Magneto into being gypsy like Doctor Doom, not Jewish. People weren't down with that. Sometimes one thing sticks, and the Joe Kelly run and the Deadpool and Cable run stuck with deadpool a lot more than any Daniel Way storyline.

So, the only thing that matters is Daniel Way's take? Hmm... that's pretty sad since he turned Wade isn't a punchline and nothing more. The last run of Deadpool read like "HEY KNOW WHAT'S FUNNY? GUY'S WEARING PINK AND PIRATES!" "YEAH PUT THAT IN THERE!" and that's a disservice to not only the characters involved but the reader.

I suggest you check out Deadpool in Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force. It's not from 15 years ago, it's still running and Deadpool's character is beautiful, well written and has so much depth... it's very reminiscent of the earlier stuff that you seem to dislike so much/

I do read Uncanny X-Force. And he is still pretty much a crack character. Though not up to 11. For one thing, he gets beheaded by some otherworld being only to be speared in the head by Nightcrawler for comic relief. Nightcrawler: "I'm glad the irony wasn't lost on you."

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
How is he complex like Wolverine or Magneto?

1. Go back to the 1997 series.

2. Read Joe Kelly's run (issue #1-30, I believe).

3. ???

4. Profit!

Or, alternatively, read "Cable and Deadpool". All of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
You never read Cable and Deadpool, then. That's my favorite version of him because that version is insane but also has some depth. Like in one of the finale issues when he finds out he has a soul and it manifests as a bunch of little Deadpool!Marvel Characters (Iron 'Pool, Captain 'Poolmerica, the 'Pool of Thunder, etc.). He was comic there, but not just really flat comic relief.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
You just told someone to fuck off because she said that a comic book character is simple?

You Marvel fanboys are scary...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not... I mean, I feel pretty comfortable here in saying that you haven't grasped the entirety of Deadpool's character. Certainly not the way he's been used recently. Because I would say the most notable and distinguishing characteristic of Deadpool is the way he's used for humor and his 4th-wall breaking and that whole element of his character. He's not just a badass regenerating mercenary, that's what he was originally but that's not what he's become.

[personal profile] mekkio 2012-10-07 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I get that. But there are people who won't read the comics because they think it's going to be huge pile of background and history that ties in with the rest of the Marvel Universe. (Uncanny X-Force can be a bit like that. But not really.) But, really, he's dark comic relief. All you need to know is that he is a can't be killed mercenary for his background and the rest is over the top camp. (Like making a literal mountain of pancakes so Domino can have something soft to land on.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, those people are a bunch of dumbos. AND I WILL COMPLETELY STAND BY THAT STATEMENT.

I don't know, I agree with you that it's weird that people are put off by superhero comics - there are definitely elements of the Big 2 that are offputting and skeezy, but the history isn't really that big of a deal. It's nothing that a little googling can't solve. And there's plenty that's rewarding about comics! Especially for people in superhero fandoms already.

Then again, I personally really love getting dropped into some kind of continuity and having to puzzle out the backstory and the references and all that. It's a fun thing for me. So maybe I'm not the most unbiased observer.
