Actually, if you can get a job that's in your scientific interest area, you'd be surrounded with people who you share interests with. All my computer science, engineering and such friends like their work and have people in their workplace that like the same things they like.

HA, I kinda agree, tbh. (Though I really want to know more about his father. Maybe it's just because all my other fave shows seem to be awash in daddy issues--lookin' at you, Lost and Boardwalk--but I feel like there's a nice angsty story there we're not hearing.)

He was an alcoholic, wasn't he? And was Sheldon an adult by the time he died or still a teenager?

That sounds pretty good actually. Except for the no sex part.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
No sex...

The number of times I've had someone say they wish they could 'live without that' to me just leaves me groaning everytime I hear it now.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't have sex with another person for maybe 8 years and i'm not missing it. Keep your genitals away from me...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
idk i don't find the show an accurate portrayal of being immersed in research culture tbh

It's not. That episode where Sheldon comes into his friends labs and touches all of his friends' things made me itch. DON'T TOUCH MY STUFF, SHELDON.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's necessarily "research culture" that the OP is looking for, per se. Just a life where all of things on that checklist are checked off.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's certainly not an accurate portrayal of working for a university.

OMG so much this. I can't count the number of times in a day I wished my family and friends shared my interests and would shut up about "the important things in life" like marriage and children and home renovation and mortgages and talk about SciFi and fantasy instead.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I wish my coworkers talked about TV shows I cared about instead of sports and Real Housewives...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'd take home renovation and mortgages over my parents constantly telling me about their bladder and bowel problems. Boundaries people.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
If you don't want to have sex, have children, and get married, then...don't.

The problem is when most people around you is into those things and keep pushing you to fall in line. Sounds like OP isn't in a situation where they can pick up and head for geekier, more independent pastures.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Some of those are in direct contradiction of others, tbh. Want a good career? You follow peoples' expectations unless you're either filthy rich of talented/brilliant beyond measure. And I'm sorry, OP, but that's not many people at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I hope for your sake, the "no sex, no children, no marriage" wish is not after the fact.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* I know what you mean, OP. All those things sound really good to me, too.

[personal profile] quinnzel 2012-10-09 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
Of all the BBT stuff I've seen on the internet, this secret is the only thing that has ever actually made me feel like picking up the show.

I don't know if I will, but I really like the idea of a character like that.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't. The show is standard sitcom fare, so if you haven't been interested before, don't bother.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding that don't. It's really stupid, never funny, and frequently sexist and racist.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Watch just a couple from different season to get a hang of who people are, and then just dive into fandom. My husband watches it, and I've never managed to watch an entire episode, but I love the fandom and the characters.
