No, you know, I sometimes feel this way about slave AUs that obviously exist only for the kink. Especially when the writer lovingly details how poorly the slaves are treated. I just get so pissed off that even the 'good' characters just accept it. So, you are not the only one.

Okay, can't help myself, really need to pimp out The Slave Breakers by maculate_giraffe here. It's an original slave AU and it's very well done. Yeah, there's some sex but it really isn't the kind you usually associate w/ slave AUs. It explores the politics of slavery, the dynamics of someone literally owning you, slave heirarchies. There's even a social justice angle -- characters pushing for reform. (Complete with what I dub the "SJW" character -- well meaning, idealistic but basically out of touch with reality.)

Have to jump in and pitch "The House of the Earth" series by mithen, which is a Bruce/Clark AU.
It's true that there's enough slavery and omega AUs out there written just for the sex but there's also plently of them examining the tropes and the genre and subverting them. Maybe OP has been skipping that huge liberated omega fic in their fandom for some while. It doesn't hurt to look.

Just as a counterpoint, and not to bash this fic or anything since I think I only read through the first story, but I found it be very much like every other slave fic, just with not much sex. It was all about getting slaves to accept that they were gonna be slaves and to get used to it. It could absolutely change in the later stories.

Also, this is why I don't like a majority of slavefics. I would rather someone rebel against the system and win, than just get used to it cause that's the way things are.

It gets more political later on? I can see where you're coming from, though. The Slave Breakers are trying to make the most of a broken system. This means taking "broken" slaves and slowly healing them up and conditioning to the point where they know how to survive and thrive in their slave life. What I like about it is that it doesn't sugarcoat this -- as much as the "Master" in the story is close friends with his few permanent slaves (since he used to be a slave alongside them) their are a couple moments where the imbalance in their positions is pretty pointed.

Also, they get their freedom in the last story, so yeah, the story doesn't stagnate.

What the above anon said - as the series goes on the slave breakers' attitude shifts from "we're doing the best we can to keep people safe in a bad system" to "the system is so bad that we can't in good conscience work with it anymore." There's also a lot more exploration of how individual characters cope with their enslavement and the shit in their pasts.

I've only read one fic with actual rebellion in it. Star Trek, Kirk/Spock, about 37,000 words long. There's sex, but it's somehow not as problematic as the usual slave/owner thing.

Here, if you were curious: http://notboldly.livejournal.com/42104.html

(I like this author a lot, btw--they write a lot of ideas that sound awful, but she turns them around. I wish she'd come back.)

I've read several RPF AUs specifically about people bucking the system, but I know RPF isn't everyone's cup of tea, so I don't know how helpful that is.

Even when the good characters want to resist the system and address it in their narrative, they're always in a position where they just can't, so what they do is just have a consensual happy relationship with their slave that's different from what's happening with everyone else around them, the end. Because the point isn't to be heroes, just to get a happily ever after with these two people. Nothing wrong with that, but highly frustrating for me when attached to those loving slavery details.

Me too. And as much as I don't like Keiramarcos' writing, in her BDSM au subs have security blanket that seems to never exist in any other universe. Like, replace subs with women and doms with men and you see the problem, don't you? ugh.
