There is no age limit, but I do think that the older you get, the more competent you have to be. It scares me to find grammarless wish fulfillment written by sixty-year-olds.

I rather agree with this. I'm 44 and know I'd better get it right! :) I have a lot of derision for poorer grammar and punctuation skills.

I didn't even find fandom at all until about ten years ago. Now my daughter is part of it.

(Age/competence anon here). I'm in my late twenties, and my concern isn't so much "Shit, I'm living in a fantasy world!" as "Shit, I'd better learn more anatomy and perspective so the fantasy world looks convincing!"

Ha! Same here. When I was 16, I wrote some lousy fic, zero research, etc. And now it's like, "hmm...this takes place in the 60's...let's look at the Olympic listings of the 60's! And figure out how Russian and German syntax differ from English! Woot!"

As for anatomy and perspective, that's more a professional concern.

Not everyone got into fandom when young. Also, not everyone speaks/spells good English, for a very wide number of reasons not related to stupidity or carelessness.

Fair point. Perhaps I should say "The longer you stay in fandom". And yep, some people have unrelated difficulties with English, so it wouldn't be fair at all to put them in that group.
