obviously not, since this particular comm tends to skew mid- to late-twenties IIRC.

There is no age limit, but I do think that the older you get, the more competent you have to be. It scares me to find grammarless wish fulfillment written by sixty-year-olds.

Dude fandom is full of all ages. I don't get why teenagers think they own the rights to obsess and geek out about media.

The only reason you ever have to give up fandom is because you want to. Age ain't nothing but a number.

Why can't we get over this bullshit idea that only teenagers are allowed to like things? That growing up means losing interest in fandom? They're completely unrelated. Most of my fandom friends are in their mid- to late twenties, some are younger, some are older. A lot of them are very 'grown-up' (jobs, married, kids), but that doesn't make them stop loving fanfic and fandom and shows and books. And it'd be damn sad if it did.

Get over it, OP. There is no such thing as 'too old for fandom'. There is no age limit for being enthusiastic about things.

Growing up has nothing to do with fandom. Growing up means learning to take care of yourself and manage your own life. It doesn't matter what else you do.

I'm 46 and I'm not the oldest person even in my closest fandom circle.

I know of one fan who is in her 80's.

So, safe to say, there's no age limit. Though maybe you are getting burned out and need to give fandom a break. That can happen at any age.

The concept of fandom has existed for ages now, and the fact that people are more likely to have easy access to a computer/the Internet nowadays makes it even more pronounced that fandom isn't just for "kids" - there's people who are old enough to remember when they only way you could do this stuff was through zines/etc. I'm 27 now so relatively young I guess, but have been involved in fandom to varying levels for over ten years. Yeah, don't worry OP - chances are most people are older than you think. And a lot of us are doing things that are considered grown up but still indulging the less serious side of our personality. You can have both!

You don't have to and anyone who tells you that you do is just a butt.

Although I'd recommend studying up on your grammar a bit, you used 'too' in several places where it should have been 'to.'

I couldn't imagine fandom without people over 20. A lot of the great fanworks and discussions I love are from people who've had time to mature both themselves and their skills. If they all jumped ship just because there were too many candles on their cake... fandom would not be nearly as cool.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 50. My best friend - whom I met around 35 years ago - is in her late 40's. We met through fandom, when I was in college and she was in high school. We're both still in fandom. We're both still friends. We both have different friends older than us who are in fandom. I have friends in their 60's in fandom. My mother, in her 80's, is a huge HP fan.

Fandom isn't an age. It just is.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in my early 30s and I know tons of people in fandom who are my age or older. There are women in their 50s in my main fandom. These are people with careers and families, but that doesn't stop them from writing fic. Think of it this way - fandom is a hobby. Growing up doesn't have to mean giving up all of your hobbies, and in fact, most people need a hobby or two to stay well-adjusted. So if you want to stay in fandom, stay in fandom.

Nah, I have several fandom friends who are in their late thirties, and I didn't even get involved in fandom til this year and I turn 20 in November, so just because you're not a teen doesn't mean you can't join in on the fun :) Most of the best writers and artists actually have experience.

I still sort of half-worry about that, too. I'm 23 years old, so part of me does wonder if I should be letting go of what I ultimately consider to be part of my childhood. I'm trying to teach myself that it's not like I have to let go of these things, just as long as I can take care of myself and be responsible as well.

Well, most of the original Sherlock Holmes fans aren't exactly teenagers, aren't they? You can be over your teenage years and still enjoy fandom. The only thing is, what fandom are you interested in?

while i agree with the other posters that there's no artificial age limit on enjoying fandom or being a geek, i feel the same way

even worse, i'm afraid it's happening to me right now

writing, drawing, even roleplaying got me through some of the worst years of my life, but i haven't had any inspiration in a long time, or even a show/book/game/whatever that really caught my eye or enthralled me the way my old fandoms did. i don't have a family or anything, but i do have a 40+ a week stressful job and i freelance 10-20hrs a week on top of that, so i don't have a lot of time to get into new things either

it sucks because i really miss having a fannish community and friends to hang out with, but i think you need to be a fan of something to be in fandom lol

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
WTF with the 'I'm too old to enjoy life and fandom' secrets? People, I'm 42, I still write fanfic, I write professionally and I still have a family and a dozen or so other jobs/careers--What's with this life ends at twenty attitude?

A friend of mine is a nurse and she had a patient in his eighties who absolutely loved and I mean *loved* gangster rap. Demographics exist but damn, they aren't as narrow in scope as people think.

OP, really?

Do you know anyone over 30 years old in RL or, you know, anyone over 25 in fandom? Does it appear that those people, when they begin to get older than 21, wrap up everything but drudgery and work and put it in a box somewhere in their head??

All age types are in fandoms. I know grandmothers who write some of the most hilarious commentary on True Blood you've ever read, and 60+ year olds who not only meta like a boss, they turn out some fantastic fanfiction ever to post. And they fangirl as hard as any tweener you'll ever meet. And they do it with class.

And I'm fairly active in fandom, write fanfic and whatnot, and I'm a geriatric 41 years old. *gasp*

So no, OP, you're safe for another forty or fifty or sixty years. Keep on keeping on with your creative self.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Looks at birth certificate...hmm, 70's, good times.

Late teens, that was literary the last century, the last millennium even.

Do I feel guilty that I'm still doing fandom stuff when approaching my 40s? Do I even care?

I'm too busy reading/writing fanfic, browsing tumblr and livejournal, voting in polls, chatting with friends, etc. to stop and think about what's appropriate at my age.

And you know what? I'm way happier than ALL my non-fandom friends. Because at the end of the day when I'm done with work and real life I have fandom to squee over and have fun with, to feel passionate about without too much effort. They have nothing.
