Some of us were over thirty when we discovered 'online' fandom. (Yes, me). I'd been a fan of Tolkien's work since the late 80's but with only one or two people (family members) to discuss it with.
With one or two exceptions the people I talk to online are in their late twenties onward, and most older. I read their fic because it is maturely written, (and they're very talented authors). I've never felt I was too old to like something passionately, to devote time writing fic, or reading it or admiring good fanart. The online Tolkien fandom has given me more wonderful stories to read, lead to some terrific in-depth discussions, and introduced me to some remarkable equally geeky) people from all walks of life, and all parts of the world.
Also, as you get older, you care very little about what other people think, to be honest. And older geeks are great fun; never stuffy or dull. I am looking forward to being an octogenarian geek! \0/
