Why can't we get over this bullshit idea that only teenagers are allowed to like things? That growing up means losing interest in fandom? They're completely unrelated. Most of my fandom friends are in their mid- to late twenties, some are younger, some are older. A lot of them are very 'grown-up' (jobs, married, kids), but that doesn't make them stop loving fanfic and fandom and shows and books. And it'd be damn sad if it did.

Get over it, OP. There is no such thing as 'too old for fandom'. There is no age limit for being enthusiastic about things.

I agree, and well said. Especially There is no age limit for being enthusiastic about things.

It's so odd that people continue to think one day you should drop your interests because you're getting older and it's somehow ~not appropriate~ anymore. That's silly OP! Like others have said, you don't have to give up anything you don't want to, and shouldn't.

If fandom is out of the question as you get older, what exactly ARE you supposed to be doing with your free time? If it makes you happy and you enjoy it...what the hell is wrong with it? This argument just boggles the mind.

what exactly ARE you supposed to be doing with your free time?

Having dinner parties, drinking, laundry, kids and work. The older you get the less fun you are supposed to have.

I think that's what people assume.

Cocktails only!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. As adults we are only supposed to be having adult activities. Dinner parties, not gaming nights. Cocktails, no soda or chocolate milk! Ties and jackets, no tee shirts and jeans!

Oh kids these days.

The only way you'll take my soda is from my cold dead hands!

I plan to be buried with mine.

Thanks for the idea! Now I want to be buried with my 360 controller, a 12 pack of Dr. Pepper and my LOTR DVD's.

Excellent plan, don't forget something with internet access though... I plan to rock fandom even when I'm (un)dead.

okay, sadly, my boss (who is in her early 40s) once snidely said "aren't you an ADULT?" to me when she overheard a coworker and I (both of us are 27) talking about getting together that night. Why? Because we were going for frozen yogurt instead of drinks :\

So yeah there are legitimately "adult" people who think those things.

Welp, anon... those people are assholes.

Totes agree with this. People can be so judgemental about things that don't even affect them, when they shouldn't really care at all.

Plus imo, frozen yogurt is way better than alcohol.

Exactly!

Hell, I drink and I'd still rather go for frozen yogurt most times!

Dude, that doesn't make any sense!

Maybe your boss has a poor relationship with alcohol and therefore feels insecure when other people aren't drinking? I don't know. To me that seems like the only reason someone would ever react that way.

You can have my Diet Coke when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

Also, why is it either or? Why can't you have dinner parties AND game nights? Cocktails/wine AND soda and chocolate milk? Ties and suit AND t-shirts and jeans?

Because most people aren't just one thing... most people like a whole bunch of stuff. YOU DON'T HAVE TO CHOOSE ONE OR THE OTHER.

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-10-08 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinner parties? But I don't like dinner parties! And I don't drink! Don't want kids either... what ever will I do? D:

It's perfectly fine if people want or need to do those things, but...everyone's different, not all people are going to spend their free time the same way, and that's not a negative thing. Sure people can tell you how to spend your free time, but you don't have to listen to them, and why would you?

I just don't get assumptions like this, and I'm never going to. *shrugs*

Well, so long as your interest isn't in teenagers.

lmao, that is not what I was referring to, and is a completely different topic. Agreed though, of course.

Judging from my parents you're supposed to play golf, let your church committees abuse your time, drive all over the continent, and not understand technology.

Fuck that noise, I'm forty and that's not the way I want to live ever.

Two of those perfectly describe my father! Who has thankfully given up on me ever being anything remotely like him. And to each their own but... Sounds boring, to me. Traveling isn't so bad, and a round of putt putt golf every once in a while can be fun, but the rest of it... Er, no.

And you shouldn't have to! Also, it's awesome, not odd, that you continue to be interested in fandom. I wish more people were, at any age.
