Unfortunately, there is still a bias held by some people that grown-ups interested in "geeky" or "childish" things are mentally/emotionally stunted and unable to survive the real world AT BEST... and at worst are pedophiles or some other form of sexual deviant. Even more unfortunately, there are certain types in the internet who do perpetuate those stereotypes (Chris-Chan, the very vocal insane MLP:FIM fans).

But there are thousands of other people who are living proof against that stereotype. Fannish adults who can hold jobs and have functional relationships and raise families. There's a whole bunch of articles written about celebrity "nerds". Even President Obama collects comic books! Now if he's allowed a fannish hobby, so are you and everyone else.
