I still sort of half-worry about that, too. I'm 23 years old, so part of me does wonder if I should be letting go of what I ultimately consider to be part of my childhood. I'm trying to teach myself that it's not like I have to let go of these things, just as long as I can take care of myself and be responsible as well.

Honestly, letting go of the things that gave you joy throughout your childhood is the first sign of getting old not growing up. By getting old I don't mean a certain age, but a certain attitude where there's nothing good left and everything has to be harshly criticized and these damn kids should get off my lawn (in the non-joke way). Don't do that. There's no fun down that road.

I agree completely. Submitting to other people's expectations and rejecting your own wants is the way you end up angry and stagnating.

Internet fandom didn't exist when I reached the age people think of as adulthood. If I hadn't jumped into it wholeheartedly (if I had gone the way many of my friends did, clinging to their narrow definitions of social life) there are so many things I would never have learned, many of them of real importance. And now my former friends are trying desperately to understand things like Twitter and Anonymous whereas I kept up with it all through fandom.
