People just writing a secret over a screengrab of some TV show or w/e. Just screenshot with text on it. It's simultaneously incredibly lazy and completely unreadable.

Some of us don't have photoshop. I only have Gimp and don't know how to do that much. Most of the time I try to add a black box around the screengrab so I can put the tex there or at least make sure the color and font are ones that is legible over the picture. But I don't think text over a screengrab is automatically bad unless it is unreadable.

I agree that text over screengrab is not automatically bad. Thick, even-lined text like the font used for meme captions should be easily readable even without outlining.

Yes, the key really is to pick a thick, even-lined font and to make sure the color contrasts enough without being an obnoxious, hard to read color like red or green. If that isn't going to work with your screengrab, just pick a different one.
