I'm mostly just scratching my head at the whole 'afraid it'll become mainstream' thing. Beyond the whole lol-hipster movement, is there a particular reason why people wouldn't want it to become even more popular (let's be honest, it's already obscenely popular) and easily accessible? I mean, a Homestuck animation series would be pretty awesome. It might actually help me understand it better than I already do.

Or is there a second connotation to 'mainstream' that I, in my ignorance, don't know?

It's not mainstream. It's popular certainly, but hasn't broken through that way.

Most believe (and it is often true) that things have to fit a certain mold to be mainstream. To hold that mass appeal. So, in order to be mainstream, Homestuck would thus presumably have to be altered to be more palatable to the general public. And most fans (including myself) would say this would undoubtedly ruin the feel and the point of the thing, so much so that it'd be poisoned for us original fans.

Look at how many works have been tried to be made more "mainstream" in transistion that have failed . The first Judge Dredd movie. Street Fighter.

PRIEST. FOR FUCK'S SAKE, PRIEST.

...Oh, okay, I understand that. Basically, they fear that Homestuck'll be 'sanitized' or 'Disney-fied' for all audiences rather than be treated as a young adult (or, in my opinion) an adult work.

Agree with [personal profile] insanenoodlyguy . When something goes mainstream, the original content of the work could(can?) be seen as unacceptable to mainstream society, forcing the author/director/producer/artist to change his or her style to the point of being unrecognizable, or to the point that it butchers the very thing that made the original work popular.

I didn't think of that before you both mentioned it. I just sort of assumed that Hussie'd just keep it as it is and not knock all its teeth out and replace it with pearly-white dentures.

He probably won't, but someone else would. And for some reason, that scares me.
