Balanced reciprocity is pretty much hardwired into our brains. We've evolved to be cooperative, but we've also evolved to have negative emotional reactions to signs of antisocial behavior. Of which ingratitude is a prime example.

In any case, your logic is flawed. One can enjoy the act of being nice for its own sake and still be hurt by ingratitude. And one can be nice for the sake of "looking nice" without being bothered by ingratitude.
