How about "just for the sake of doing nice things?"

Really, this secret sounds like you're the type who is "nice" for the sole purpose of being recognized as a nice person, not because you actually enjoy being nice.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This is going to sound really defensive, but I'm angry at someone requesting I spend hours of my time doing something for them for free, and then stealing it and claiming they did all the work. I think that's allowed. I do this because it feels good to do nice things for people, and at the time, I thought I was really making someone happy. But instances like this just make me feel really shitty and wonder why I bother, a little.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, it does sound defensive. And idiotic. If it made the other person happy, why does it matter that they posted it and claimed credit for it? Especially when the song isn't even yours.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just really two-faced? And I've certainly never claimed to own the song (I have a thing about giving credit where it's due).

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you got it in writing that your good deed would stay private, that's just you assuming shit and getting burned, and that's your problem.

nayrt
Because claiming that YOU put in the time to do something that someone else worked for is a jerkass thing to do? Please. If you worked at something as a favor for someone and then they posted it claiming they put in the work, you'd probably be mad too. Get off your high horse.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I've had it happen before. With both icons and short fanfiction. I really didn't give a shit, because being famous for copyright infringement on the internets is not the reason I do stuff for people.

It's possible to plagiarize fanworks. And it's a really shitty thing to do.

Moreover, the OP made something for a friend as a gift, and then that friend turned around and passed off OP's efforts as their own. If I baked you a cake, and you took it and brought it to a party and said, "Look at this cake I made! Aren't I awesome and talented?" you'd be a douchebag.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible to plagiarize fanworks. Yeah, it is. And I find the butthurt over it hilarious. If that makes me an asshole, oh well. I'm sure as fuck not gonna deny that.

If I baked you a cake, and you took it and brought it to a party and said, "Look at this cake I made! Aren't I awesome and talented?" you'd be a douchebag.

Says you. There's an entire marketing culture built around taking credit for a homemade meal that you bought out of the freezer case and threw into the oven for ten minutes, but I don't see anyone bitching about poor Stouffer's.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I am, actually. I just don't think credit should be an issue when the "work created" is an unauthorized derivative of someone else's actual work.

Are you a nice, generous person?

But instances like this just make me feel really shitty and wonder why I bother, a little.

You sound (a) passive-aggressive as hell and like (b) people take advantage of you on the regular and that (c) you need to grow a spine. Stop jumping to "do things for people" because you think it will make them like you. If people do something that makes you angry or hurt, confront them instead of acting ike everything's cool and then dragging your feet on the walk home from school.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I do nice things because it makes me happy. But I'd still be a little annoyed if someone took my work and put it up not just without credit but claiming it as their own. And if I kept doing nice things for people and the result kept being that? Yeah, I'd stop doing nice things for them.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
And again, why does it even matter who gets credit for it? It's all fan-derivative shit anyway, so nobody in fandom can legitimately claim credit for anything. It's why I find these arguments so hilarious. "HOW DARE YOU STEAL THE WORK THAT I TOTALLY STOLE FROM THE ORIGINAL CREATORS!"

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh you're one of those. That's cute.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Translation: I don't have an argument against that, so I'm just going to fail at snark because that's what's cool on the internet today.

NA

Except that transcription is a service that people are often paid for, even when they're transcribing other people's work. So how does this argument even apply in this case? People can absolutely claim credit for doing work like this outside fandom, so why not in fandom?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Because outside fandom, it has the blessing of the original artist. In fandom, it's just flat-out theft.

fan-derivative shit

This is the point at which I decide you and I are approaching the subject from irreconcilable viewpoints. I could respect your strict adherence to copyright, although I don't agree with it, but this just comes off as classifying amateur as automatically worse than professional.

You can enjoy the act of being nice, but still hate it when someone abuses your kindness.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really seeing the "abuse" here, though. Just someone getting pissy because they're not getting credit for how nice they are.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
The credit wasn't for being "nice". I assume that if this happened under a commission, instead of just a favor, OP would still be upset. The credit was for the work put into the project.

Balanced reciprocity is pretty much hardwired into our brains. We've evolved to be cooperative, but we've also evolved to have negative emotional reactions to signs of antisocial behavior. Of which ingratitude is a prime example.

In any case, your logic is flawed. One can enjoy the act of being nice for its own sake and still be hurt by ingratitude. And one can be nice for the sake of "looking nice" without being bothered by ingratitude.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like exactly the kind of person who would do things like op described. Selfish little piece of shit.
