You're right, it does sound defensive. And idiotic. If it made the other person happy, why does it matter that they posted it and claimed credit for it? Especially when the song isn't even yours.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just really two-faced? And I've certainly never claimed to own the song (I have a thing about giving credit where it's due).

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you got it in writing that your good deed would stay private, that's just you assuming shit and getting burned, and that's your problem.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, that I got burned is my problem?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is. Not the other person's fault you care more about credit than about doing a favor.

nayrt
Because claiming that YOU put in the time to do something that someone else worked for is a jerkass thing to do? Please. If you worked at something as a favor for someone and then they posted it claiming they put in the work, you'd probably be mad too. Get off your high horse.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I've had it happen before. With both icons and short fanfiction. I really didn't give a shit, because being famous for copyright infringement on the internets is not the reason I do stuff for people.

2/10

*sigh*

Right, any opinion you can't argue with is a troll. Yay! You win at Butthurt Bingo! Your prize is the satisfaction of knowing you're making a big deal about nothing and making an ass of yourself!

Somebody who thinks it's okay to claim credit for people's efforts in one area is probably going think the same in other areas. Copyright has nothing to do with it, it's a sign of a nasty personality trait.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
lol, slippery slope with a side of ad hominem. Was wondering when this would show up.

It's possible to plagiarize fanworks. And it's a really shitty thing to do.

Moreover, the OP made something for a friend as a gift, and then that friend turned around and passed off OP's efforts as their own. If I baked you a cake, and you took it and brought it to a party and said, "Look at this cake I made! Aren't I awesome and talented?" you'd be a douchebag.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible to plagiarize fanworks. Yeah, it is. And I find the butthurt over it hilarious. If that makes me an asshole, oh well. I'm sure as fuck not gonna deny that.

Says you. There's an entire marketing culture built around taking credit for a homemade meal that you bought out of the freezer case and threw into the oven for ten minutes, but I don't see anyone bitching about poor Stouffer's.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Stouffer's gets money though.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
So? The original creators are getting money, too. That doesn't make fans demanding credit for derivative works that they didn't authorize (and in a few cases, are extremely uncomfortable with) any less snotty.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but they're marketing it as something you can pass off as home-cooked. If my friend asked me for a fanwork they could pass off as their own, and I agreed and gave it to them, I wouldn't ask for any sympathy either.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
And I think it's hilarious to ask for sympathy when the thing you "created" isn't your own work anymore than Stouffer's lasagna is your ancient family recipe.

What a disgusting creature. Always gotta have that one asshole, right?

you're not an artist, writer, or any type of creative person are you

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I am, actually. I just don't think credit should be an issue when the "work created" is an unauthorized derivative of someone else's actual work.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
So, I'm going to jump in to complain about this: http://uima.uiowa.edu/john-d-freyer/

Talk about taking someone else's work and claiming it as your own.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
And I'd agree with that. The "artist" has no business calling that his because it isn't something he made (and yes, I think the whole modern "art" movement about passing off found objects is shitty).

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
then you don't know shit about this stuff, you're just parroting off the same stupid bullshit base makers on deviantart and pixiv editors on tumblr do.

I don't know about writing or transcribing audio, but in the case of art: An artist's actual physical work (or in some cases, digital work) is copyright to them. It's the LAW. so even if the character they drew is trademarked (because you can't copyright a character) they still own the copyright to the work itself. As long as they are not making a profit off that work (and in many cases, even if, because it's usually on such a small scale that the companies don't give a shit) THEY STILL LEGALLY OWN IT.

And even if that's not the case for OP's situation, it's still a pretty fucking shitty thing to do. All they wanted was a line of credit somewhere, but no, that's apparently too much to ask for.

You have no idea what you're talking about. shut up.

Are you a nice, generous person?
