Really, this secret sounds like you're the type who is "nice" for the sole purpose of being recognized as a nice person, not because you actually enjoy being nice.

This is going to sound really defensive, but I'm angry at someone requesting I spend hours of my time doing something for them for free, and then stealing it and claiming they did all the work. I think that's allowed. I do this because it feels good to do nice things for people, and at the time, I thought I was really making someone happy. But instances like this just make me feel really shitty and wonder why I bother, a little.

You sound (a) passive-aggressive as hell and like (b) people take advantage of you on the regular and that (c) you need to grow a spine. Stop jumping to "do things for people" because you think it will make them like you. If people do something that makes you angry or hurt, confront them instead of acting ike everything's cool and then dragging your feet on the walk home from school.

I do nice things because it makes me happy. But I'd still be a little annoyed if someone took my work and put it up not just without credit but claiming it as their own. And if I kept doing nice things for people and the result kept being that? Yeah, I'd stop doing nice things for them.

Balanced reciprocity is pretty much hardwired into our brains. We've evolved to be cooperative, but we've also evolved to have negative emotional reactions to signs of antisocial behavior. Of which ingratitude is a prime example.

In any case, your logic is flawed. One can enjoy the act of being nice for its own sake and still be hurt by ingratitude. And one can be nice for the sake of "looking nice" without being bothered by ingratitude.

Yeah, I'm definitely calmer than when I first found out even if I'm still disappointed. I've decided to keep doing it because I really love to. There's just that kind of wary feeling now like you're never sure whether someone else you're helping is going to pull that kind of thing or not, and probably even that will pass eventually. I do genuinely believe that most people are coming from a genuine place, it just hit me out of left field.

Ah, rather I took a pop/rock song and arranged it for a solo instrumental. By default that sort of thing requires some arranging because it's not written to be that way.

OP, I think anyone with any sense will get where you're coming from. You put in a lot of hard work on transcribing the entire song, and someone else took credit for it. That's not cool at all. If that person asks you for any more favours, show 'em the door.

You know you can get people kicked off websites for that right? Including Deviantart? If you have some way to prove that you made it, just send it to the mods. I've seen plenty of people tossed for claiming they drew Japanese fanart, and I've had someone kicked off a comm for taking credit for a translation of mine. Just get them thrown out before they do it to someone else.

If you don't mind, could you explain how you've had someone kicked off a com for credit of a translation of yours?

I'm in a similar situation. I became friends with someone via tumblr, and they asked me to translate several pages of doujin for them (3 works in total and a few comics) and posted my translations to an LJ comm, saying it's theirs. When I asked them about it, they stopped talking to me. I have emails and things from them, but that's about it.

I'm honestly more offended over the fact that they just stopped talking to me, and really hurt over it.

Don't get me wrong, I guess it's kind of rude that they took credit for your uh, work? But transcribing the lyrics to a song is not exactly some kind of magnum opus of effort.

I will point out that even if what they had done was just writing the lyrics by ear, if they're not fluent in Japanese that could also be pretty difficult. Words in songs are often not pronounced clearly, and it can take multiple listenings to catch it all, sometimes, especially if it's sung quickly.
Heck, I don't always catch all the lyrics of songs in English, and I *am* fluent.
