Wait, so what's your objection to pairing Snape with characters who are closer to his own age? Do you have a problem with other people shipping Snape/James, or Snape/Sirius, or whatever?

Why does shipping Snape/James have to be a guilty pleasure? So you like the pairing. There's nothing wrong with that. It's not like Snape/Lily is canon (unless you count unrequited love as being enough to make a ship canon).
