If the fan-pairing canonically have no feelings for each other to begin with, putting something in cannon to make it clear they have no feelings for each other wouldn't really be changing canon. Neither would being more careful to avoid writing things that could be interpreted as romantic. It was always canon that they weren't together and weren't going to be.

You can still say that's petty, okay, but saying the author would be "changing canon to punish fans" is over-dramatic and an exaggeration. It's more like the author would be making a point to avoid ambiguity on a subject they'd already decided on.

Which I really don't think is all that petty. If they were considering making the ship canon and changed their mind because of annoying fans, then that could be pretty petty, but that's not the case OP described.
