Emilie Autumn secret! yay!

OP, I know what you mean. When I first got into her music I didn't really grasp a lot of the nuances and meanings I get now.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know who she is, or who the OP is for that matter, but don't ever sell yourself short like that. You are inferior to no one.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone's inferior in some way to someone else, or a lot of someone elses. The thing to remember is that that does apply to everyone, and it doesn't make anyone worthless.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
something about her rubs me the wrong way. idk.

that last sentance tho. :(

i don't know you op, so you could well be an almighty asshole but i'm going to give you benefit of the doubt and say that you are a good person and you deserve to be happy. i wish i could do something nice for you.

DO PEOPLE EVEN CONSIDER HER A ROLE MODEL?

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-13 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
There are some of Emilie Autumn's songs that I love, but in general I find her unbearable. It's probably the fact that she hates men so much that it permeates every single thing she says or writes. Or maybe it's her ridiculous affected "Victorian Asylum Girl" persona she was playing up when I first became aware of her. (Is she still doing that?) Or maybe it's her canceled concerts and tours and general trend of being undependable.

Did you know she's a panromantic asexual? I know that you're ace, so I thought you might like knowing that.

Also, I didn't like that "Affected Victorian Asylum Girl" persona either, until I read some of her interviews, poems and writings and learned that a lot of that is her own way of dealing with her own mental illnesses. She isn't appropriating mental illness (though I don't always enjoy the way she references certain mental illnesses) but part of the affected persona is her way to poke fun at herself and make dealing with her mental illness more bearable.

Also, like the musical acts she's similar to (Rasputina, the Dresden Dolls) part of her style is the performance. Playing a character. A lot of goth/undustrial/niche music is sort of a combination of vaudeville, cabaret, and performance art, as well as music. She doesn't just sing songs, she puts on an a whole show, and a lot of people don't like that. It's cool if you don't.

As far as hating men, I don't know if she actually hates them, so much as her lyrics are her way of dealing with times she's been taken advantage of or been used by men. Also, some of it may be an act.

She's not my favorite, but I do enjoy several of her songs and poems.

And honestly, if I were to not listen to music based on disliking characteristics of the singer, I probably wouldn't listen to anything. Everyone can be an asshat sometimes.

I do know a few girls who consider her a role model, unfortunately. And they do REALLY bother me when they appropriate mental illness to seem quirky or trendy.

I still like her music, though.

TL;DR- I BASICALLY AGREE WITH ALL THAT

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-13 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was aware of her orientation! and I know that she's had horrible experiences and been taken advantage of, and she has every right to deal with that in whatever way helps. But idk, as a whole package, her personality grates on me.

I really like similar acts (ESPECIALLY Dresden Dolls and Rasputina, so you were spot on in that comparison), so I don't really know why hers bothers me so much more, except that it does. But, like you said, character of the singer does not musical quality make. And I really DO like some of her songs (my favorite is Shalotte).

But songs like Gothic Lolita ("You never did anything any man wouldn't do") still make me really uncomfortable. Sexism goes both ways, and a man singing about how all women are (insert insulting insinuation here) would be a huge deal. Although I am aware that certain genres of music are very misogynistic, it is pretty consistently seen as a negative trait, whereas with Emilie it's almost....glorified? Idk. Obviously she writes what she wants and is totally allowed to, I'm not saying she should "be stopped" or anything at ALL like that, but I feel that on the whole she promotes negative stereotypes for both genders AND for people with mental illnesses.

DA

Oh god.

You're one of those people who thinks misandry exists, aren't you?

Re: DA

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-13 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Um. yes, I suppose I am? Obviously it's not as prevalent or damaging as misogyny is on a global level, but where I live it does EXIST. Racism is racism no matter which race is being targeted, isn't it? So why is sexism not the same? Or do you believe that it is impossible to discriminate against white males? I'm not saying white/male privilege isn't a thing, but I gues I AM saying that misandry exists in small amounts, and that it is just as unacceptable as misogyny?

also:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misandry
(yes I know it is a wikipedia link and therefore doesn't count for much, but I thought I would include it)

Misandry does not refer to a cultural trend of hatred or prejudice against men, it refers to any instance of hatred against men for the sole reason of gender. Which does exist. That is a fact that no one can dispute, I hope.

"You never did anything any man wouldn't do"

I always thought she was aping victim-blaming rhetoric in a sarcastic way there, not actually espousing the statement herself.

Re: TL;DR- I BASICALLY AGREE WITH ALL THAT

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Shalotte is my favorite song by her.

And without wading into the "does misandry exist" portion, I thought that line in Gothic Lolita was kind of... sarcastic? Like more throwing something the specific man had said back at him. (But I've heard that from predatory men before: "I didn't do anything any other man wouldn't! If what I did was wrong, every man ever should be thrown in prison, because that's a man's natural inclination!" so maybe that's what gave me that reading.)

Re: DO PEOPLE EVEN CONSIDER HER A ROLE MODEL?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
She's not asexual, though. She admitted she lied about that. And that her family isn't dead. And that her name isn't Emilie Liddell, it's Emily Fritzges. Not to mention that she apparently lied about someone breaking into her house and "stealing" the gifts she had for her fans, and completely ignoring her computer and instruments. She uses her mental illness as an excuse to be cruel, and almost every single partnership she's entered into his ended badly because of her immature, entitled self.

I'm a casual fan of Emilie's, but I do agree that I sometimes am a little bothered by her character/subject matter/how she handles people that she dislikes or disagrees with. I don't know if I would consider her a role model, and I think some of her fangirls are a bit too obsessive and worshipful of her. But she's a human being, one that's obviously been through a lot and has issues to work through, so I try not to judge her too harshly, even if I don't always agree with the things she says or does.

I don't think she hates all guys, though. On her commentary tracks for Opheliac she seems to get along really well with her producer. Opheliac was an album where she was basically venting all of her frustrations and issues through her music, so I think the content in it was sometimes a little...extreme? But it's understandable to me. But at the same time I do feel a little uncomfortable with it.

I've only heard snippets of her new album, but I don't think it's quite as harsh as Opheliac was. The new album is pretty much a concept album/musical set in the "Asylum" and almost a little Broadway-ish in style at some points. But you probably won't like it if you don't really like the "Asylum Girl" persona.

Well, if it's not as harsh I might check it out. I actually like quite a bit from her Enchanted days, and Opheliac had some amazing songs, but the overall trend and tone of the CD was unnerving to me.

Still, I am a fan of her voice and I don't think anyone could deny that she is a talented musician. So I might just have to deal with the "Asylum Girl" thing if the result is some awesome music. As long as it doesn't give off quite the same level of HATE vibes, there's a good chance I'll like it.

Yeah, from what I've heard of the album it's definitely a bit lighter in tone than the last one. It's a mix of her Enchanted style and her Opheliac style, I think.

OK, full disclosure time:

While I am a massive EA fan, who heartily approves of her messages (in particular her attitiude to men), and while I do so very much want more people to hear FLAG, I have to say: If you found gothic Lolita too hard on the males, you will probably not care for FLAG.

I love it myself and would really like to recommend it to everyone, but if I were a male, or a male sympathizer, I would be very... upset.

Give it a go it's just my own interpretation and I may be wrong, but, well, you've been warned.

I don't know who she is either but I'm really sorry you feel that way about yourself.

I feel that way about myself lately too, including the suicidal thoughts. So I understand.

I hope we can both get over it.

I'm sorry to hear you're in such a bad place, anon.

I know exactly how it feels, but I will also say that usually when we feel inferior to everyone else in the world, we're not being fair to ourselves.

You don't have to feel that way. I don't say that to just be flippant and "oh, decide you're cool now and hey presto you won't be depressed." I mean that as hard as it is to change patterns of feeling that way... it's worth trying. Because the vast majority of people who feel that way? Are judging themselves way more harshly than they would others. And I'll bet you're doing that too, OP.

If you met you walking by on the street one day, would you feel about the you you met the way you feel about yourself? If no, then you're being good to others at the expense of fairness to yourself.

I hope you can learn someday to be as nice to you as you are to other people.

I don't know her either. I hope you no longer feel that way OP. No one should feel inferior for any reason. There are a million things you can do that would put you a head above everyone else, like helping others or creating things that show their talent. Every person has something in them that makes them special. You just have to find it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
OP, you do not need to apologize for being a bad fan. You do not owe this artist anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
You just misinterpreted the lyrics, don't beat yourself up over it OP. Everybody can have moments of feeling inferior, I know I do. Just gotta remind yourself that no one is perfect and focus on doing things that make you happy or productive.

OP, you were fourteen. You were obviously going through some issues. Clearly, songs about suicide were going to trigger you, and that song actually describes it. So go easy on yourself.

Chiming in with people who're saying you're not inferior. Obvs no one's an almighty McPerfect saint, but no one is totally inferior to everyone else in every single respect, either. There's something good about you, and there's something that makes you happy, and sometimes that's enough, right?
