BAWWWWW!!!!

Re: too big

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep!

OP, I'm 42 years old. I watch old movies (including silent ones when I can), I watch television from before I was born, I read books that were written hundreds of years ago. There's problematic shit in most of them. Sometimes you have to look hard, but they're there. I get to like them, despite that. You're not going to take that away from me because I have the gall to like something that isn't perfect.

In short, grow up.

I'm so confused what do old movies have to do with this

Ever seen 'Breakfast at Tiffany's', and Mickey Rooney's amazingly horrifying portrayal of a 'Chinese' man?

That's what old movies have to do with this.

Re: too big

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
yeah but it sounded like that anon is saying "Don't judge me for liking older media just because racism was acceptable in that time period" but the secret is about two modern-day shows.

I'm sure I'm misreading what they're saying...hence the confusion.

I think they're basically saying 'it's okay to like things even if they have stuff in them that's problematical, because nothing's perfect'.

Which i agree with. The OP seems to be saying that you can't like the BBC Sherlock because of a badly done character and if you like it over the American Sherlock you're not only condoning stereotypes but you're somehow hating on Lucy Liu being interesting and non-stereotypical. Or, at least that's what i got out of it.

That's not the entire point of the show? You singled in on one aspect/problem of the first episode to compare the two?

I can't wait until the Elementary/Sherlock wanks dies down and we can enjoy whatever retelling we want without it starting a fight.

Or some people like me, can enjoy both and want to crossover them. (Head canon: The two Sherlocks are long lost distance cousins that were completely unaware of each other. They were named after their great-grandfather, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock. It's just in the blood that they would pair up with Watsons.)

I agree with EVERYTHING you said here.

John and Joan, in stereo: "Oh, God there's two of them..."

I was thinking more of:

(John and Joan are standing with the Sherlocks)
JOAN: So, Sherlock isn't the most common name. Never even heard before you two. Is there a story behind the name?
BBC SHERLOCK: I was named after my great-grandfather.
CBS SHERLOCK: As was I. That's very interesting. Wait a minute, I have a turn of the century pic of him on my phone.
BBC SHERLOCK: As do I.
(Both Sherlocks dig out their phones. After a few seconds of fiddling with them they present the photos. It's the same photo of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock. Messy hair and all.)
JOHN: My God, they're related! They're distant cousins.
JOAN: That explains so much.

Nice try. Too bad you ended up in the failbar. This could've been fun.

I'm very disappointed.

Aww, Furby, I haven't thought much of them in ages, this new design and light up eyes look adorable. Is this the third version of them, I seem to remember one in about 2008 but maybe not...

Or they like Sherlock's story better than Elementary's, because, you know, that's a simpler reason than whatever is going on with individual characters from a particular race.

...Can we not do this? Can we not be the sanctimonious ones? Like, I realize after all the crap Elementary fandom went through before the show even started it's tempting, but can we please stop this ridiculous rivalry?

Different shows. End of story.

Yes, this. I'm getting sick of this wank, and I'm not even in the fandom. Nor have I seen either show. Come on guys, enjoy your fandoms and let other people enjoy theirs.

Re: TB

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT. I MUST WANK ABOUT MY FAVORITE BEING THE FAR SUPERIOR ADAPTATION AND THE 'OTHER' ONE BEING A WHITE-HOT MESS OF A SHOW WITH NO REDEEMING VALUE. BECAUSE, YOU SEE, IF I WANK HARD ENOUGH AND LONG ENOUGH I WILL EVENTUALLY WIN AND MY SHOW WILL BE THE BEST ONE EVER AS OPPOSED TO THAT 'OTHER' ONE BEING CLEARLY THE INFERIOR REMAKE.

...or something
