Vagrant Story. I think I'm the only person who's been actually writing fic for it consistently for the last ten years. :/ There are still fans out there, just... not really producing anything. Though I got a brief discussion going on my journal the other day.

Dune
Babylon 5

Those are the two I'm most into with the least amount of fandom.

I love Vagrant Story. :)

It's been years since I played, though.

It's been... a couple years since I played it. But I played it through something like 7 times on just my most active save - plus a couple of times on another save to capture the entire thing and stick it on YouTube, plus a couple times to show visiting friends who didn't have a save file handy... I have it practically memorized by now. (Also a sword that's +160 vs. EVERYTHING, because on one playthrough I ran up the clock to 99 hours just fine-tuning weapons and getting rare gems. XD)

Not that I haven't been thinking I'm about due to play through it again, though. The first time I beat it was right around Christmas, so as the holidays approach, I always get nostalgic for it.

I only played through once, but I found the plot and characters VERY interesting. Sydney fascinated me. Have you played any of the Final Fantasy games set in Ivalice? It's supposedly the same world. I've heard that Sydney appeared as a shop-keeper in one of FF Tactic Advance games, but my favorite game in Ivalice, which I mentioned in this thread, too, is the original Final Fantasy Tactics, now available on PSP as War of the Lions. Very cool stuff. And FFXII is also set in Ivalice. :)

Yep, I played FFT back when it was first released, loved it, and when I found out that FFXII was going to be directed by Matsuno, it immediately became my most anticipated game EVER. Matsuno with a FF-level budget - how could that go wrong?

I haven't played the Tactics Advance games yet because I'm not so much an Ivalice fan as a Yasumi Matsuno fan. XD His games just repeatedly push every plot and characterization button I have, even if apparently the FF fandom as a whole thinks that the plot and characterization in FFXII sucked. I kind of get the feeling that a lot of them missed some of the subtle points... and were distracted by Vaan, who wasn't even in there originally, much less the main character. (I also suspect, given the way FFT and VS ended, that Balthier and Fran were not actually supposed to survive...)

Actually, I found FFXII rather fun, too. :) I don't think you're missing out by not playing the Advance games. I didn't really like them, personally, and I'd have rather had a sequel to the original Tactics, though that probably would have spoiled the are-they-aren't-they-dead ending, which I liked because it made me sad, if that makes sense? And I'm sad that the original FFT characters are so underrepresented, but then, FFT isn't part of the actual sequence, so I suppose I understand.

I adore Vagrant Story, but I suck hideously at the game's mechanics and I don't feel confident enough to do fanwork just based on what I've watched in youtube walkthroughs.

You know, I used to kind of be horrified that most people doing fanworks for VS hadn't actually played the game, just passed around videotapes of the plot scenes - because it is a hard game, yes, but part of what makes Ashley so freaking awesome is how he's basically a medieval Solid Snake and it's fairly significant to his character that the city keeps throwing EVERYTHING at him, and he just keeps bashing his way through all on his own. I used to figure that not having experienced that through playing the game leaves one with a lesser understanding of the character.

But, well, like I said. Most people I know who did fanworks (including my fiancee, who I met in VS fandom) even in the days before YouTube couldn't beat the game and just passed around a series of plot tapes. And their fanworks didn't suck. So I was just being lame and elitist and decided to get over myself. ;) Now I'm firmly on the side of "If you want to write/draw/vid, and you have ideas, then write/draw/vid." Even those of us who have played and beaten the game will never have many of the questions raised by the plot fully answered (what really happened under that tree...?), and the world isn't developed so deeply that we don't all have to make parts of it up as we go.
